4H will usually need wheel rotation for the splines to catch, only if you're very lucky will they be lined-up enough when sitting still. Rarely, you can slowly swing the steering from lock to lock and they'll engage. Regardless that, it does take a handful of seconds to get into/out of 4H.

There's going to be pros & cons for any attachment method, and a corresponding risk for damage to the finish regardless all else. Having an adhesive strip fastening method removes the downside of vibrational erosion of the finish, but (if properly applied) requires a heat gun for proper removal...
