Ford Rangers shift quite bad when cold, it's a known (and considered normal) issue. Not just the first shift, but all the way until it's fully warm. I test drove one...
This is like the morons I see in full overdrive going up a steep grade and lugging down their engine. Then going down the grade at 100 mph or riding the brakes the whole way down... never learned what the L mode, or manual shifting (or gear limiter) was for.
