This old 1986 2wd long-box was my main winter beater for many years in the 1990's.

How I survived with such a little 2wd:

First off, 5-speed manual, having a manual gives you more advanced wheel slip notice.

Small, skinny little 14-inch wheels that sliced through the snow.

2 sand tubes in the far back of the bed to give some weight to light rear-end.

Longer wheelbase than a standard cab helps likewise.

The rest is up the driver behind the wheel.

Agree, I owed a B2200 Mazda 5 speed and a little weight in the back of the bed and good all season tires.
IMO one should find a open parking lot and drive it like you've stolen it to learn what it feels like to slide around?

Good Idea! That is the way my cousins taught me to drive growing up here on the mountain!
