How much can my SR Double Cab XP / 4 x 4 with class lV hitch & 7/4 pins safely tow?

- Toyota site says 3500 lbs!
- Then I call my dealer and they said the SR Double cab is 3500 lbs BUT the SR Double cab 4X4 model with the class IV tow package is 6500 lbs.

Does anyone out there even know? It sounds crazy to me that a mid sized 1/2 ton rated truck could only pull 3500! - I'm going to be pissed if my dealer is wrong!

There is a chart in your owner's manual. Your specific model number is on the drivers side door data tag. Follow the chart recommendation.

As the other post said, it is in your owner's manual, but I also saw all the needed info when I was in a pre-sales mode. Toyota lays it all out in the Tacoma specs area, and they have the specific towing web page.

Some do their own solutions, but it is also important to remember one's insurance policy likely has restrictions on modifications. Be careful that you don't do something that will void your insurance coverage.

I don't know FL law, but for the different states where I've bought vehicles, you make a purchase contract, and it is your obligation to know what what product you bought. When I got my 4th gen it was pretty clear that you had to have a model and package combo with the trailer brake combo to have the maximum tow capacity just from looking at Toyota's marketing materials.

This has been bounced around on the forums a time or two. I don't recall whether it's a transmission cooler or what, but the engineers chose to limit your truck to a 3,500-pound tow limit.

I think on the auto SR it’s all tied to a lack of engine oil cooler and the reduced engine output. I think all the others including the MT SR are several thousand pounds higher. My MT SR is 6,400.
