Yep, it's the shutter. There are multiple slats that are broken, and I would assume that it tried to actuate and close and couldn't because of those slats.
From what I can tell from the previous threads about the shutter issues with the connections getting water in them, it is perfectly fine...
Oh yea, got on the windshield too and I'm honestly surprised it didn't shatter it.
$925 for all 3 parts shipped. Local dealer wanted $740 for just the shutter.
I am absolutely SHOCKED.
Actually, I'm not shocked at all. Toyota is not going to do anything for any of your transmissions until and unless you have the DTC listed in the TSB.
He wants someone to tell him if his VIN is in the range. That's what a ton of people were doing when it first came out.
The internet has enabled the lazy to have their answers spoonfed to them.
While I agree (much like the transmission issue is being blown way out of proportion), it does seem that the defective cowling is exacerbating the problem. That or OP just lives in an exceptionally moist area.
Think of your trans as a line of window panes lined along a track. The casting debris is a baseball thrown directly in the middle of those panes along the track.
I'm not a Toyota fanboy by any means (had a Rav as my first vehicle) and this is my first truck - of any type, but yall are something else lol. If you're worried about it, sell it. There is literally nothing you can do about it unless it fails. Take it to a dealership with no signs of failure...
The issue is with the torque converter produced by Aisin. There is casting debris (sand) left in the torque converters, which makes its way to the trans, which takes out the gears. At least that is the official story/diagnosis. It's not necessarily a transmission issue itself.
