I just got 24.5 mpg on a 50 mile drive while fully loaded and pulling a trailer!
* I was traveling from Timberline Lodge to the Portland area, so I dropped about 5500 feet in elevation.
I came home through the Columbia River Gorge yesterday. Very strong headwind the whole time. Going 75 mph. 100 degrees, so the AC was on. Got 13.7 mpg for that tank. Can’t imagine how bad it would have been if I were pulling a trailer.
I didn’t catch the size. I have a kit with various sizes and I just found the size that worked. The rack has one size and the bed rails are a smaller size.
Regarding the 90 deg braces, I’m not an engineer, but I think the are overkill. Probably only needed if you were putting a full load on...
I’m now over 19 mpg with more miles on it. I’m convinced if you primarily drove down flat country roads you would see 25-30 mpg. Hills, starting and stopping and driving over 70mph takes a heavy toll on mpg.
