I'd keep the snorkel since I want to overland and keeping dust out is good. However, I also want to add a wedge camper and that needs the roof rack and bed rack removed. Starting from the OR remains an option though and the suspension may be enough for what I'll want to do.
He's making that comment in the context of the TRD Off Road variant because we're in a thread on that topic. The Toyota website shows both SR and SR supporting XtraCab with 6-ft bed. Scroll to the bottom of this page to confirm https://www.toyota.com/upcoming-vehicles/tacoma/
As a reminder, what we are commenting on is feedback that Toyota may be considering an OR 2-door, so not something that is likely to have been documented publicly. My comment outlined why they may be doing so.
A week ago you speculated, based on the language you used that -
Today you're saying...
I'd like to see a source for that as I watched most of those videos and didn't hear it asked or discussed. There was speculation at the time that it would be the same as the Tundra which apparently does operate that way. However, the Tundra may not be the best indication of what is implemented...
Clearly people need to be responsible in how and where they use the feature but this is how the Ford F-150 Hybrid with ProPower inverter works. The YT channel Pickup Truck and SUV Talk demonstrated powering a RV camper AC with the inverter operating just like that. It starts on battery only...
Thanks to OP for posting. This potential economy makes the hybrid option much more appealing to me over just the performance gains. Just need an auto journalist, just one, to finally get around to asking whether the 2400 watt inverter output will operate with the engine off and if it will auto...
I wouldn't be so certain that a 2-door Xtracab 6-foot bed version for the OR isn't available from the get go. The current 2023 OR has the access cab +6-foot bed for a total length of 212.3 inches. If Toyota only offer the OR as a double cab + 6-foot bed, then the overall length will be 225.5...
Yes a potentially lower GVWR for the Off Road was something I was keeping in the back of my mind. Raptor just seems the wrong truck for what I want to do. I'm wondering what mpg would be, even driven conservatively, and what that would do to range even with the 1.5 gallon larger tank.
Payload is important to me too. The various wedge campers that clamp to the top of the bed seem to be around a 250-350lbs range for what I'm interested in, but even at that relatively low weight and driving solo, available payload can disappear fast if not paying attention.
I do wonder what...
I had considered that application but with the liftgate being aluminum pulling it up manually doesn't seem too much of a hassle. A manual liftgate might also allow tighter seals to be fitted to keep out dust, videos seem to show quite a large gap around the gate currently. The anti-pinch sensors...
I agree. It seems odd to me that the sport bar is standard on TH given how many Tacos use wedge campers, or are likely to just want their own choice of bed rack. Seems like it would be a better fit on the Pro if it had to be a standard fit anywhere.
Agree. I'm starting to think that starting at TRD OR and optioning up may be a better approach for me ... but I have plenty of time to wait on more complete details by end of the year.
If I understood Sheldon's comments correctly, it sounds like the wheelbase increase was primarily for handling/performance reasons, along with the wider wheel tracks.
Its somewhat ironic that I would be more interested in a 6' bed with an extended cab resulting in an overall length the same as...
I only picked up that the roof rack was optional on Trailhunter. I like the Trailhunter and might still end up treating myself to it, but it includes a number of features that drive up the price and aren't particularly of interest for me. For example,
I have no interest in the Sport Bar, I want...
Its actually 4.5" rather than 5.5" on the wheelbase, but the overall lengths for the 5' and 6' bed versions remain the same, so there's no extra vehicle length to play with. Since the bed lengths are stated to be at least nominally the same, means Toyota would have had to extend the cab length...
Thought it might be helpful to re-post this data from a response I made that might not have been seen by folks or picked up on from the videos.
Sheldon, Toyota Chief Engineer for Tacoma, discussed wheelbase and overall length, starting around 1:52 seconds into the TFL YT video here
5' bed...

Overall length "bumper-to-bumper" with double cab 5' bed is identical (which would be 212.3") to the previous gen. Within that they "shrunk front overhang by 35mm...
Good points on the Off Road vs Trailhunter. While concerned and watching payload I'll be traveling solo and only weigh 140 lbs, so I probably have more margin than many traveling as a couple with associated food, water, and clothing needs and dare I say more US sized than I am. Because of...
I agree. If the film Up hadn't invented the Squirrel! meme then Roman and especially Andre would have been candidates to illustrate distraction. Conversely Tommy did the best, most concise, detail packed launch review of the Maverick of any channel. Can't win 'em all I guess.
