Countersunk bolts have a smaller hex, and they become pretty difficult to remove if the threads get damaged. I've never really had an issue with our skids on our rigs here with the button heads, but Barnes 4x4 makes some cheap insurance if you wanted to add it...

In the Midwest (road salt,) raw aluminum will oxidize and start to look gross. It oxidizes elsewhere, but it doesn't get broken down and pitted as bad as it seems to here.
