So after plenty of research I had finally found a bed extender that not only fit the bill, but had 1 really nice feature that most other extenders don't have. The best part, it's quite widely available and probably among one of the most affordable you'll find. Sometimes I'll carry long stuff + all my mall crawling and off road grocery supplies kept rolling around whenever i put anything smaller than a baby unicorn in the bed. Albeit some of the roll around could be mitigated by some molle panels, but the extender was the cheaper option at this moment.
The real challenge was initially making sure it actually fit, since buying large stuff off ebay is sometimes a gamble. And with stuff like this, it can be a lot of searching to find the exact info you might need (dimensionally in this case). I got lucky this time around I suppose. The other challenge was also lining it up and measuring where I needed to drill.
To anyone who was considering it, but didn't know if it could work, it does, it fits, its pretty nifty.
So here it is, a Ford F-150 bed extender installed in a 2025 TRD Sport long bed. You've probably already seen it looking for a bed extender on ebay. But it is a multi panel design where the two sides lock together. And just FYI, this IS a knockoff of the OEM Ford extender. During my research, the only difference between this and an OEM Ford one is the shape of the locking pins.
Aesthetically I think it feels more OEM than even the OEM Toyota extender and matches with the gen4 design with its chunkier look vs the bars that other extenders have. I believe it's made out of some sort of nylon/glass composite. It is pretty hard, durable, and will most likely last longer than the truck. It came with all the hardware except 2 additional nuts needed for the rotation bolts. (tail lights need to be removed to fasten)
Unfortunately my measuring was off by an inch or so, drilling the 6 holes needed. 2x main 10mm holes for the main rotation bolts. 4x 19mm holes for where the locking pins go in to. The locking pins aren't 19mm, but the extender comes with some plastic grommets that are pressed in. You can see the edge of the extender feet are just a hair off the edge. Since I screwed up there, the middle alignment spring shaft has no hole to go into (this stabilizes the left/right movement of the extender since it is sectioned with the hinges). Once i've got some lashing straps that hook onto the tailgate should fix this wiggle. At the moment, its not a super big concern to use the pin. In the future i'll probably re-drill to get it exactly where it needs to be.
Also, I'm sure you may have guessed, it's bolted in, so if you didn't have a cover on the bed, at least you can know it can't just be unhooked or pulled out. Additionally I had some red reflective tape lying around which fit perfectly into the recesses on the panel. Safety first!
This is the other feature I really liked, and I feel was actually well thought out whoever designed it. You can unlock the 2 sides from each other. Each side can fold up and has a locking latch. So if the situation should arise where I need it out of the way, but didn't want to/need to take it out, just fold them up. Folded up, they are almost come out to where the face of the wheel wells are, but they do have some slight play, you do have some wiggle room. If you notice the little + handles on the bottom corner of the panel, those are locking pins, which pull in and out. So you pull out, flip em whichever way you need, and push back in. I'm sure many here are familiar with that maneuver.
Additionally because of how it hinges, there is a way to semi fold them in order to stow or extend with a tonneau cover closed. The velcro straps with rings I had just lying around, those aren't a part of the extender.
So there you have it folks, another bed extender option. Well built, affordable and widely available.
