Another incident where the Fas-Top is SO good and some winter vehicle prep sparked some follow up here. Now getting to 1.5 years, my Fas-Top as a tonneau or just the soft topper seem to have construction just like similar stuff, trucking, ag and marine tarps. Mine was one of their early models for 4th gen and I don't know if they've done any modifications. I do use a clip and side strap or bungee cord inside the box to keep it as compact as possible and to always have full space to put a ladder and some things in lengthwise.
The real beauty is the flexibility. It is super easy to have an open bed pickup with nothing in the way. Also to take the topper component out if I'm doing really rough or dirty hauling. What's most valuable is I can be far from home or in bad weather, sometimes just doing errands or shopping and then I have a whole topper if needed. Additionally, replace the clear window with screen. If traveling, doing sports, or something like a ski area parking lot I can have shelter with ease.
Something to be aware of is they make a compatible bed rack system too, but as a river rat I chose traditional over roof cross bars for a rack and also quick/easy to remove.
Functionally or for aesthetics, it all looks like a soft tonneau and topper but here's a pic that shows how the 4th gen Tacoma looks when tonneau rolls with the topper up.
One point of caution I'd put out there is that some people seem crazy picky or maybe have their rigs for show or hobby. No soft topper or tonneau will have the precision or perfection some might be after, but if you know stuff like boat, ag, and trucking tarp or cover stuff, that is what it is like. In fact, I believe the Fas-Top people made ag and truck stuff decades before they came up with these.
Something else I've liked is you can be traveling and in a city where with just tonneau mode, it is a modest don't rob me look. I've seen people eying fancier looking rigs and was glad I did not stand out that way.
