Waking this up for a question. Still want to do this when the time is right. Do you have to have the truck on to have power to the compressor? I'm curious if you can just turn on the compressor from the "on" switch if you want to pump up a bike tire or dose the truck have to be on first?

That would be an awesome idea IF you can get it out from the bed side. If you look closely at the light, there is that black locking tab on the aft side of the light. Plus how would you fish the rest of the wiring back to the end of the bed to the taillight. It really needs to be zip tied up...

Yes, completely plug and play just as long as you have lights on the inside of your bed. I have a 6 foot bed so my part number was PT944-35241. If you have the 5 foot bed, the part number is PT944-35240.
