Is the trailer brake working?

So just got a new trailer but every time I got to use the manual trailer brake switch it tells me the trailer has disconnected and in my dashboard on the trailer brake gain area it acts like there’s no brake which there clearly is. What am I doing wrong what should I try to do? Thanks

My gut tells me you've got a wiring problem with your trailer. I tow a lot and have not had this issue.
