In these pictures, you can see the two different position holes for the trailer hitch in the receiver -- the threaded holes for aftermarket steps and bars and the tow hook mounts that will most likely make it easy to replace with an aftermarket tow hook that sticks out a little further than than the stock ones up front.

What about the two holes on the hitch receiver. One up front which is furthest from driver passes through the hitch receiver. The second set of holes closest to driver do not pass through but would be a more secure location for a hitch loch and harder to hammer off. The holes just stop like the receiver has a sleeve in it. Any ideas why?

Bumping this. Trying to figure out the same question myself as to the purpose of the second set of holes. I would like to push something further back and use the holes, but the sleeve is immovable.

I was questioning if there was a sleeve or something. I think it might be more secure for the hitch if I used the back holes and am looking for information before I drill them out for my new expedition trailer and its articulating receiver.

Does the spare tire interfere with how far the hitch can go in the receiver?
