I recently replaced the suspension on my '24 TRD OR with a complete Ironman4x4 Foam Cell Pro set up, but that's not what this post is about. I'll post wrt the suspension when I have more miles on it...
This post is about what I found whilst doing the work on the suspension. I've had a full set of skid plates on the truck for at least the past 25,000 miles. I removed them just to make sure I could get at the full underside of the truck.
I was surprised that one skid plate looked like this....
It didn't take much to figure out where the oil was coming from...
So, I visited the dealer today (Rodland Toyota in Everett, WA). I have almost 36k on the truck and this is the first time it's seen the inside of the dealer's service bay. A couple of notes...
For those concerned about warranty work on modified vehicles, if you've read any of my posts you know you'll be hard pressed to find a more modified '24 Tacoma. The dealer certainly looked at that but when I got the truck back I found they had left the shop notes in the truck.
---The tech notes stated in part "...With the lift on the truck and not sure the weight with all the add ons my *sic* have something to do with it leaking."
---The service advisor then wrote to whoever was approving the warranty work, "...Let me know if you see anything funny or something that would not be covered under warranty.".
---The approver wrote back, "I don't see any extreme drive line angles or anything, no issues with submitting a warranty claim for this repair.".
So, the system is working as intended. All my mods have nothing to do with the leaking seal so they're fixing it under warranty.
Oddly, they can't just replace the rear seal. Apparently Toyota doesn't even stock it. The solution is to replace the whole transfer case carrier assembly. Seems like total overkill to me but the service rep told me Toyota has embraced this "assembly" method of replacing parts. They don't bother with individual parts, they just replace the whole thing. Unbelievably, the part is only $245 but from the diagram I can't tell exactly what all it includes.
As you might expect they didn't have the part in stock so I don't know exactly when it will be fixed but I'm not too worried about it. Although it looks like a lot of oil on the skid plate, it hasn't leaked enough to require adding any oil.
I'm leaving in a week for a ~3-4k road trip and I doubt it will be fixed but unless the seal just lets go, I don't expect it to be a problem. Still, something to keep in mind and look for. Interestingly, my next door neighbor has a '24 4Runner Limited and said he has the exact same leak. I can't imagine they have the same seal but it seems like a mighty odd coincidence!
