We've went on several family road trips in my dad's trucks but the most notable thing is he has helped me out many times with hauling things prior to me owning a truck, and I'll always appreciate him for that!

I remember him letting me shift (manual Isuzu Pickup I think?) when we drove to the stores in like the early 2000's when I was maybe like 7 or 8 years old. I also remember the truck having a built-in telephone handset.

Several years ago, my dad turned his 2014 Toyota Tacoma into a meal on wheels with a custom truck bed kitchen. We built it in our garage—him building a slide-out frame, me cutting storage panels, passing tools as his “shop sidekick.” The mod had a pull-out grill, a foot-pump sink, and LEDs for night outings. On its first trip to Joshua Tree, we hit a rut, but dad laughed, hit 4WD, and taught me to drive through. That night, we grilled tacos under the stars. Back home, we’d tailgate by Belmont Shore, cooking burgers at sunset. That kitchen made our Tacoma epic, and building it with dad is a memory I’ll keep forever.
I’ve got my own Tacoma now and can’t wait to have similar adventures with my dad again and maybe one day my own kids.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

Yeah my dad's "truck" was a 1980s Toyota "Sunrader" he tricked the hell out of, strapping PVC tubes to the side to hold fishing rods, and every panel inside would come undone when you hit a bump, etc so zipties and wingnuts everywhere.

He would drag that beast offroad and find just the right spot to set up camp for the night. Things were always going wrong, fires coming out of the air vents when the wiring burned, flats on the back duallies, jesus, but that thing was a beast.

My brother and I would lay in the bed above the cab and look out the front window like we were "flying" along the road. Nowadays everyone would freak out at the idea of two boys not strapped in and covered in bubblewrap, but different times.

Not his, but a pic I found to give you an idea:

Here are a few pics that I could find of his actual one, note the wingnuts on every cabinet to "hold it closed with a half turn":

and a shot of my own son on top of that same camper, note the PVC tube for fly rods on the side, lol:

the "flying zone" where my bro and I would lay during long trips, pre internet, cell phones, etc... had curtains you could close at night, but we opened them up on the road.

Good Times.
