I finally finished the electronics side of the OPENROAD cap on my 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter.
One of the bigger challenges with adding a cap to a 4th Gen Tacoma is that you’re not just dealing with the cap itself. You also have to think about the factory cameras, digital rearview mirror, third brake light, interior lighting, and how everything comes apart again if you ever remove the cap.
For my setup, I wanted to keep the original Trailhunter camera/third-brake-light assembly completely intact.
Instead of pulling the factory cameras out of the truck’s original assembly, I bought a second complete OEM third brake light/camera assembly and used that with the GG OFFROAD relocation setup. That way, the original hardware stays together and I can return the truck to the factory configuration without transferring cameras back and forth.
The project covers:
I also used weather-resistant disconnects so the cap wiring isn’t permanently tied into the truck.
This ended up being a bigger part of the cap build than I originally expected, but I’m really happy with how clean and reversible the setup turned out.
Full video:
If you’re running a cap or topper on a 2024+ Tacoma, I’d be interested to see how you handled the cameras and third brake light—especially if you wanted to keep everything easily reversible.
All Tacoma. All the time.

The project covers:
- GG OFFROAD camera relocation for the digital rearview mirror
- Restoring the bed/cargo camera
- Wiring the OPENROAD cap’s third brake light
- Connecting the cap’s interior lighting
- Building the wiring so the cap can be disconnected cleanly
- Keeping the original Tacoma camera assembly intact
