I recently bought a couple sets of tires and went through a couple tire changes at Discount Tire. I didn't think to closely inspect everything after the last set of tires were installed which was about a week ago. I was getting my PSI dialed in today and noticed 2 chips on 2 different wheels (LF,LR) along the edges of the wheels and scuffs on all of the center caps. I did a quick Google search and the chip depths and locations seem to align with some other folks' experiences of damage after tires changes.
I don't want to go in there and cause a bunch of trouble, but I also haven't been off road and haven't even parked next to a curb since the install (no rash on the tires either). Haven't even been on the freeway for more than 10 minutes at a time.

Have any of you had this happen ? What do you guys think ?

Kinda bummed. Thanks for the help.

Almost all shops use plastic duckheads, the scratch is unlikely. I would say the scuffs around the center cap could be from wheels coming on and off a lot with all the alignments... tech going quickly zapping nuts off

For the paint to chip like that requires some real force though, 10 mins is enough to get a chip on the freeway, especially on a rear wheel.

I could see that. Just never had a chip like that on any of our vehicles' wheels. And it's on 2 wheels that are less than 3 months old. Not even my wife's wrangler and we rip that thing on service roads. But I suppose it could happen on the freeway. On two separate wheels. Twice. In 1 week. 😂 Never say never! Maybe I'll buy a lotto ticket.

Were those on the rear, if you remember? Rear wheels always get beat up from the front tire sending rocks their way. Lot of offset on the TH wheels and I have longer mudflaps/less offset than you and still hear shit hit the underside of the truck/rocker. I would place my bets on a rock chip at least for the edge.

For the center nah, that might have been someone rushing, it happens though. Chains won't really take care of your wheels as well as independent shops usually, but they're cheaper.

I've got a set of Rays TE37 SL in Double Press Black on my WRX and it only goes to a tuner/speciality shop (for everything actually lol). I wouldn't let a chain tire shop touch those wheels haha

The chips are front driver, rear driver. So that's another odd thing. Idk, but DT is the last place that touched the tires so my mind immediately went there. Saw similar looking chips in similar areas on some other reddit complaints, but doesn't necessarily confirm it. And since I didn't check immediately after the install, if probably be SOL even if it was them.

Yea the scuffs I'm not too bent about. I think I'll be able to buff them out.

Go find a gravel road, throw it in 4Hi and floor it :cwl: you'll have so many rock chips you won't know which one is new or not

Yeah I mean not a terrible idea to take pics before I guess. I would recommend going to a Toyota indie shop/4x4 shop instead, they will probably also do a better job balancing your tires too.

Next time for sure! I was buying a set of tires for the Taco and the Wrangler at the same time, so didn't even think about it, just getting the DISCOUNTS haha . DT just right next to my house.
Oh well! I guess I'll chalk it up to life. Bummer, but not the end of the world.

Good excuse to get the TH wheels refinished whatever color you want :cwl:

Dark metallic grey might look good with the blue.

I just bought them! lol also not in the same tax bracket as most other guys around here haha

Idk though dude. Unless other people are mistaking multipe wheel chips after tire installs ? A lot of these look similar in similar areas. And I just pulled a couple randos. Not saying I'm gonna raise hell or rule out the possibility of angry freeway rocks back to back, but it does seem sus, as the kids say...

It is possible it was discount. Especially if the plastic duckbill on the tire machine was worn.

I'd wait for them to get a bunch more rock chips etc then refinish.

Usually getting wheels painted is less than $250/wheel, maybe wait till you need tires again. Could probably do whatever color you want.

At that point I think I'd just pony up the extra $100 per wheel and get some sweet methods! You think I'd have any rubbing issues at 275/70R18 if I went with a +40mm offset to put the wheels back under the fenders? I'd assume no. Had no issues stock suspension with this+20mm offset.

Ah well. I kept the truck mint for 4 months. That's pretty good!

Any reason you're sticking with 18s if you're gonna get new wheels eventually? I don't think there's many downsides to 17s on these trucks. Cheaper tires and way more selection too.

Wheels always get beat up anyways. No biggie tbh lol I don't have any curb rash on my TE37s but they got a rock chip on the spoke on the way home from the shop. It is what it is. Roads have all sorts of crap on them you can't see.

18s mostly because of the whole "I'm not rich and I just spent $1300 on 18" tires" thing 😂 But yea will probably just wear these out and then go 17s. If discount offers to do a store credit or something, then I'd stick to 18s since I just bought the tires.

Yeah just run em down and then swap for 17s.

Shit I thought the 255/75/17s I was looking at for $245 each were expensive :cwl: (Cooper Discover Road+Trail)

Yea man. SL options in 275/70R18 are few and far between! And not cheap.
