Well that's fair, then. The few I've encountered in the past have been completely useless when powered off or have had a reflective surface that was next-to-useless in "normal mirror" mode.
You really need to drive a Tacoma with it. I always use mine, better field of view and clearer. You switch it back to normal mode and it is just a regular old mirror. If you had it, you would prefer it. As you stated you can view it on the big screen just not full time. You can tap the camera button behind the shifter, and it will come up for a few seconds, I've found that useful to looking at something in the bed while driving. I have mine set to come on automatically under 10 mph but for the front and overhead view, helps with parking. I wish Toyota would allow the cameras to record like in Tesla's. I had to add a dash cam, but I already have a forward-facing camera, just allow it to record in a loop to an SD card or thumb drive.

Right on - that's not bad at all. The ones I've seen with no functionality when powered off were aftermarket add-ons and the crappy reflectivity one was in a late model F-150. I just wasn't impressed with any of them but I'll change my stance after seeing these. That's how they should all be.
I've test driven a tacoma with the digital rear view. It was a little disconcerting at first, but it was really neat. I could see it being very handy with a full rear seat or with a flipped up tonneau cover since the camera is above the rear window.

With the lever flipped you're back to a normal rearview mirror, so you can easily switch as needed/desired.

@HoptownBob If this is the Gentex Full Display Mirror, there's mention at their site about integrated DVR providing dash cam capabilities. It'd be interesting if you could find an SD card slot on yours? Maybe Toyota just doesn't mention the capability or maybe they've had Gentex disable/remove? (or maybe it's not Gentex, but if so I'm not sure who else makes a FDM)

As for cost - looks like the Gentex Full Display Mirror goes for about $850 vs about $250 for a Gentex autodimming mirror.
