Hey all, I've got nearly 7k miles on my 26 Tacoma. Since around 5k miles, I've had intermittent brake fade. It's not super significant, but absolutely noticeable. I went camping over the 4th of July, and coming back over the mountain passes, had it happen quite badly. The initial bite point remains consistent, but mid and fully into the pedal becomes really inconsistent. I use the transmission a lot for maintaining speed, so I'm not riding the brakes, but when dropping 4k feet in elevation means that they got used plenty. I've done the pass dozens of times in various cars, and have never had such issues. I do lots of wheeled sports, and like think I've got a good muscle memory and feel for the brakes, and this has me somewhat puzzled.

Any similar experiences? Does anybody have experience with aftermarket brake pads? I've found a few threads talking about brake issues, but nothing sounds exactly like what I've felt. **photo for some attention **

That doesn't sound right, unless you were loaded pretty heavy. I have traveled in the mountains several times with over 1k weight and have had zero fade. Maybe others have suggestions.

This trip didn't have any heavy cargo other than several people in the car. I use the brakes a lot since I'm in an area with lots of elevation fluctuation. I find too often that I come to a stop significantly slower than what I expect. 80% of the time, they feel perfect, but after heavy use, they get very inconsistent.

Your brake fade is likely fluid fade from mountain heat or air trapped in the lines. The "dead zone" in your pedal is also common on 4th Gen Tacomas due to electronic safety assists (like pre-collision braking)

I've read about the electronic systems changing modulation. In my experience, if there was air in the system, it would be more consistently mediocre instead of intermittently soft. At least that's how it always feels on my motorcycle and mountain bike. I highly doubt I'm over-working the fluid to too high of a temp.
