Two things:

A easy built in way to lock the rods. Often find that whatever solution I find to hold rods either doesn't lock at all or it's a pain to lock and unlock.

It needs different options if using the rails. I have a bedrack on my truck (most probably do). An option that goes above the bed rails is great, but an option that drops below the bed rails would also be very good.



For example the leitner bed rack pictured below has storage pods, so something that attaches to the rails but then could hold rods slightly under the rails would be great.

Something that is modular and can be easily removed and replaced as a loaded unit would be innovative. Going off the examples in your pics, it would be handy to be able to transfer the rod holding part of the mount to a "dock" on the wall or ceiling in a garage or shed on the days not fishing. Then quickly and easily transfer the loaded arsenal of rods back to the vehicle (locking) dock. Offering both locking and non-locking versions might decrease the price for those that can make do without a lock. Bungees or something else to make sure the roads are secure while driving at highway speeds is important if the isn't a locking mechanism.

1. Demand for Rod Holders: Probably the most important piece of storage equipment in my truck.
2. Preferences: Rocket launchers. Preferable ones that attach to a bed rail system. I currently use a ratching cargo bar that's outfitted with rocket launchers so I'm able to keep the bed secure when I don't have rods in the back. It's not permanent, so it's inherently easy to tamper with, which is a big flaw.
3. Current Satisfaction: Always room for improvement. A lockable option would be huge, so would an option that's able to work with a tonneau cover.
4. Ideas and Suggestions: It seems you guys are designing towards a horizontal rack that secures to factory bed rails. Please keep rod size in mind. On the coasts, most rods are one piece and 7'0" or longer. Rod holders that secure inside the bed aren't going to work out for most saltwater fishermen. If you're designing towards a horizontal rod rack that secures to a bed rail, locking functionality will be extremely important.

Based on what others said gave me another idea, something that angles the rods from the bottom of the bed to above the tailgate for the 7ft rods. 7ft 1 piece is the most common.

Honestly even having a mounting option you could change out from bed rails to something else would be nice. I would love to see more options for mounting to bed racks, especially the sides, so you aren't using up top cross rail space which is for the kayak.

I'm assuming you know this, but fly rods are a whole different thing to design for. My earlier post was assuming conventional fishing rods. I have a 4-banger River Quiver from Riversmith that I love for my fly rods. It locks and provides good protection for fully rigged fly rods with reels. The most common fly rod length is 9', but they do get longer 10'+ depending on the use. Anyway, probably best to stick to designing for conventional gear for now! There are several good options for secure fly rod storage already on the market.
