Hybrid owners: Does the gas engine turn on when you start the car?

Yea its weird that none of the ones on the lot have driven in EV mode on any of the test drives.

I could see that happening if the drives are very short, because mine will not shut off the ICE until the engine warms up, but my truck gets to that point in less than a mile. That was actually my biggest surprise after getting my truck, because I only expected it to use the motor/generator to add torque when needed. I did not expect it to spend as much time driving on just the battery as it does.

Once I get into my neighborhood it will drive to my house and into my garage without ever starting the ICE again.

This is actually one of my favorite things about my Tacoma. Well, this and creeping along in heavy traffic without the engine coming on. I didn't really think I'd care, but it is nice to know that you're not just burning gas for no reason, and it's nice and quiet for those around.
