Situation:
  • Exercising 4WD on a dirt road
  • Vehicle in Park
  • Selected 4HI from 2HI → 4HI light flashing, will not engage
  • Waited ~1 minute → still flashing, no change
  • Another vehicle pulls up behind me → need to move
  • Switched back to 2HI → selector shows 2HI, but 4HI continues flashing (waited 15 seconds)
  • While 4HI was still flashing (mid-transfer), I shifted from Park → Drive
  • Moved forward ~15 feet
  • During movement, 4HI stops flashing
  • Stopped → shifted to Neutral → selected 4HI → immediate engagement
  • Drove straight briefly
  • Stopped → selected 2HI → disengaged normally
Question:

Did I cause any damage by shifting from Park to Drive while the transfer case was still mid-transfer (4HI flashing)?

(To clarify: the concern is NOT about moving the vehicle itself, but about shifting the transmission into Drive from park during an incomplete 4WD engagement.)

Going to/from 4H requires meshing collars to engage/disengage. Unless the teeth in these collars are lined-up (or close enough for drivetrain slack) it will require motion of the wheels before engagement will complete. Disengagement requires those same collars to not be under tension, so a bit of wheel rotation is sometimes necessary. Between 2H and 4H is something where you actually DO want to be rolling, for this reason. You can shift between 2H and 4H at up to 62 MPH; if you're above this you'll get a warning from the nannies until you drop below that speed.

So long as 4H isn't fully engaged or disengaged, you'll get the flashing indicator light, it should go away within a few feet of driving regardless which direction you've shifted.

It's going between 4H and 4L where you want to be stopped and in NEUTRAL (not Park!) to complete the action, as that happens in the transfer case with multiple gear meshing changes requiring the drivetrain to not have force applied.

On the 2WD to 4H shift, the transfer case usually can do its part decently, but the ADD will almost never be able to complete its shift without the vehicle moving. And no, there should be no issues caused by going from park to drive….but in the future just shift when you are already in drive and moving.
