Tacoma died on freeway puffs of white smoke coming from exhaust with gas smell

Its less of a design issue and more of a nature of the beast issue. Direct injection has been around for a long time. It allows the engine to burn cleaner, more fuel efficiently, and has better knock control.

But there's a reason it hasn't been in use. Its not nearly as reliable as manifold injection, and on its own allows for carbon build up on valves which is why Toyota uses a hybrid system. But we have to use it now to make emissions. So, for the same reason we don't get the Hilux or super fuel efficient diesel options, thank big daddy government.

This makes me wonder what the truck would be like in a diesel configuration. Are there any folks internationally that have a diesel 4th Gen out here? Is there even a diesel 4th Gen in existence yet?

UPDATE: answered my own questions. No 4th Gen diesel in existence, as the Tacoma is primarily an American US offering. The Hilux has diesel trucks, though, for sure.

Yeah we don't typically get diesel options. There are two primary factors for that. One being we are one of the few nations in the world where diesel is more expensive than gas, which is entirely due to taxes. Two being politicians are ignorant twats and make decisions they have no business making. You know how they say black rifle mean, scary, bad? Yeah well thanks to the coal rolling craze of the mid 2000s they think black smoke diesels mean, scary, bad too.

Could be driving these trucks getting 40+ mpg with better towing characteristics and no range issues with our tiny fuel tanks but noooooooo. Dickheads.

I wouldn't be surprised if a bad injector constantly dumping fuel into the cylinder causes a hydrolock.

Final update: injector was replaced, leak down test was done (apparently no bad results), A/F ratio seems fine, I have to pay to have my vehicle shipped 6 hours and they will reimburse me. Discussing with Toyota to offer me some sort of extended guarantee that the motor will function as needed after this repair.

If it was, in fact, a faulty high pressure injector I would absolutely make sure the oil and filter have been changed. Lots of fuel got past the rings, straight into the crankcase.
