I need to look into this so I can remove the stupid electronic part of the tailgate, I’d like to close it myself, but I think mine has the damper on it so maybe I can just remove the motor
I'd think that removing the Right Tail light (2 qty of 10mm Bolts?) and pull perpendicular to the center line of then truck - you should get a good view of what you need to do easily ... Maybe just Disconnect the linkage and Electric plug and safely wrap/protect from damage rattles?

I am guessing that if you disconnect the tailgate motor you will have warnings to deal with too. It would be nice if you could just turn it off and use it manually because sometimes waiting for it to do its thing seems kind of silly.

Just did MINE - Great Write up! Couple Suggestions and pics.

The Lights do pop out Perp to the side. Use dash/ trim plastic tools/lever. I took a couple pics so you can see the timberman clips. and Timmermans

At the Min. , Immediately upon getting the light popped out - i would disconnect the light from the cable - in plug and one clip - to prevent scratching paint ... OR - Immediately upon on getting the light in your hands - cover the Metal inserts on the light back side that the 10mm bolts screw into to hold it in place to prevent scratching.

All was easy and simple - until I went to snap in the Gas charged shock. I picked the top to attach first and had a problem with trying to align the other end for snap on due the limited space available in the fender when you get you hand in ..... and the strength of the shock. IF I were to do again - I'd attach the bottom first ....

Also I added pics of the MFG info on the gas shock - in case someone wants to aftermarket source.....

Toyota is all over the map with their packages. My 2025 SR5 Xtracab does not have the easy lower tail gate. And although it allegedly has the upgrade package, it does not get everything. Yes to heated seats, LED bed lights, spray in bed liner. But no to heated steering wheel, QI charger or automatic climate controls. 🤨

I was bummed Toyota no longer offers the smaller cabs in TRD Off Road, but it is what it is.

Thanks for the posts showing how to add the tail gate assist. I intend to upgrade mine.

Thanks for posting the parts. It made it way easier to order what I needed.

I installed mine today. It wasn’t too bad, but not entirely without drama. The OEM torque screws on that hinge are really shallow and really tight. Of course, I stripped out the bottom one.

It took a little extra time to drill a hole in it and get it out with an EZ out.

Then I had to pick up a new screw at Toyota. Four dollars for that little thing. 🤣

The additional ball and hydraulic strut went in pretty easy and I’m much happier with the tailgate now that it doesn’t slam.
