On a related note .....I got the OEM Michelin tire mounted on the TRD OEM rim. When I removed the temp spare from it's position, I noticed that grooves had been worn into the sidewall from a tubular cross member on the truck. For my new spare, I took a section of foam pool noodle and put it between the tire and cross member.

I've owned five Toyota trucks that had the spare under the bed. It sucked. I relocated 3 of them to the bumper.

Well, I'm going to bump this up to the top. Awhile back I had a 5th TPMS installed in my full size matching spare which is mounted on the rear bumper. The dealer had been bugging me to bring the truck in for a free service. In this case, it was for a tire rotation and multi-point "inspection." I put inspection in quotes because clearly they didn't bother looking at some things.

I asked the service writer about moving the spare into the rotation, and they wanted $25 to do that. Then I asked about getting the TPMS in the spare to read on the dash. They wanted $200 to do that. Um, no.

Today I rotated the spare onto the truck, then sat in the driveway, followed the owner's manual directions (mostly) and programmed the 4 rotating tires myself in about 10 minutes. The TPMS I used was a Toyota 42607-0E090, $57.

Can you walk us through the exact process? I got my matching 5th wheel mounted up with a Toyota OEM TPMS. Just took it to the dealer for the 5k service interval. Two days later, the TPMS light comes on. Figured the sensor didn't get registered to the truck, so it couldn't "see" that wheel. Was told "your truck (2026 TRD OR I-force Max w/ upgrade package) can only support 4 sensors." They said that if I wanted to do a 5 wheel rotation, every time i did it, I'd have to manually change which 4 sensors the truck had registered.

I tried doing the "tire rotation" relearn that's in the menu. Didn't work. Dealer also tried it. In my manual, here's what it says under "registering ID codes" Settings> Vehicle Settings > TPWS Settings > Identifying Each Wheel & Position. But I don't have that last one. It has "tire rotation" though that doesn't seem to work.

Do I need to leave the old one behind when I start to drive?

I guess I should have paid attention to what I did. All I can tell you is I went to the owners manual and found a section that got me close. The directions were not exact, but I was able to figure it out.

Bahh, that's ok. I'm super annoyed. Dealership just has to be wrong. The whole point of being able to add a second set of tires means it can support more than 4. But, I got the wheel mounted and TPMS installed at an indy tire shop because I hate my dealer. So my best guess is the truck doesn't know to look for the new TPMS ID.

Did you get your tire mounted and TPMS installed at a dealer?

I did just try the second set option and it gives you an option for a new valve/ID, so I did that and said to add it to set #1. Drove around for 15 minutes or so with a "setting wheel position while driving" message on the tire pressure screen, but it never went away.

This sounds familiar. I don't believe I used the 2nd tire set option. I thought I just programmed 4 wheels, not a second set. TMPS was bought at Toyota, but installed at Discount Tire when I bought the tires.

But you didn’t need a dedicated TPMS tool for it, correct? You just did it through the truck interface? Did you have to do anything to register the new sensor with the truck?

I haven’t gotten the truck to recognize anything since the relearn, but tomorrow I’m going to take the spare off and drive some more. Maybe air down and back up.

super frustrating. Why can it know 8 sensors for 2 sets of tires but not 5 to have a usable spare for an off road truck?

Correct. No special tools. I just did something on the dash and the truck found the four new TPMS assignments automatically after driving it.

I bought five tires and rims. When the mechanics installed them they threw my old tires in back and said, wow, TPMS is working. But no. So when I took the tires out. Now tpms. So I had them configured. The spare will be rotated in and the TPMS will be reconfigured for the new positions of the tires and Firestone said that would not be charged when I do that.
