Is there any good way to haul 4x8' sheet goods? Why did they make the wheel wells like 2" too narrow to fit a sheet of plywood between them?!?!

I found these images from a 2nd Gen forum. Interesting idea, although I have a power lift tailgate so I'm not even sure if this would be possible or if it will mess up the electronic motor. Any ideas welcomed!

There are four notches set into the bed for 2 x6's. I haven't hauled that way. The last time, I think I loaded a sheet of plywood flat, held it up, and closed the tailgate.

I tried something similar with the power tailgate and it just returns to the fully open position if it feels any pressure on it.
The new Colorado's have a midway position to do that for the tailgate.
You can see how they do it on their tailgate by this photo if you zoom in.

I know my power tailgate constantly gets mad at me and stops moving all together so I have to move it myself, I'm sure this would work perfectly fine, what a silly way to make a few bucks making these chains to the right length for a flat haul tho

use the notches in the bed, put some cut 2x4s in there, use straps across the back to keep them from coming out.

I considered this, but I feel I still would need to put something above the tailgate for (support of the material) to prevent something like drywall from snapping, since this method only supports about 4ft of the sheetgood.

That's what the milk crate is for in the second link. Seems to me that or something similar would work fine in conjunction with the two boards in the notches.
