4WD/AWD Malfunction Error

This morning I turned my truck on and both the 4HI/4LO lights were flashing together in orange even though I was engaged in 2WD. Since today is Sunday I have no choice but to bring it to the dealer tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone else experienced the same thing.

So the first time I took to the shop they said my truck was pulling a code for the front differential and that I would need to bring the truck back in during the week to have their specialist do a full diagnostic test to see what the differential code is caused from. So after I took it in the 2nd time they told me my front actuator failed/went out and that happens if 4wd doesn’t properly engage or disengage (mind you I’ve only kept my truck in 2H) so they ordered my replacement actuator and I have to wait them to receive it from Toyota. Apparently I’m the first truck that had this issue. So there’s that.

Starting to wonder if I’m experiencing the same thing TFL recording with their front actuator failing… only difference is I wasn’t in 4H I was in 2H.

I am going through exact same thing, when i try to use 4x4 system goes haywire, needs to be put in 2wd and turned off for 10 minutes at least, come back and can drive, but no 4x4 available anymore, contacted dealer.

Just had this issue and they purchased and replaced oart number 41400-35040 uder warranty.. it was a bad sensor on the actuator

Why do they refer to it as AWD?

Why do they refer to it as AWD? Should be 4WD.

It just generic labelling for software, either way for me they replaced the whole 4x4 actuator and slew of other components related to it and changed the oil for it, it took awhile cause they had to order parts 2 times! If you have thus issue it is no glitch, get it fixed while under warranty, if day about 3k with labour for this repair.

My 25 ORP flashes 4HI when in 2Hi. It will go into 4HI but then coming out to 2Hi the 4Hi just flashes. Both actuators replaced. Toyota factory reps can’t figure it out. Dealership has been working on it for over a week. Anyone have similar experience issues?

Common problem.. they will replace the actuator.. you get a free front diff fluid change too

Used to work at dealership, when i had some downtime I would wonder thru the shop and hang out with the mechanics to learn the Tacoma's and 4r's. When it snowed there'd be a rush of Taco's in the shop.

The actuators are a cheap plastic housing that will easily fail. Talking to the Mechanic best medicine is to routinely activate 4wd to keep everything lubed and working.

Well that's a bummer but glad they got it fixed.

I work with a co-worker with a 1990's Tundra 4x4 and advised me, years ago, to engage my 4High at least once a month to keep it lubricated in there and which helps it electronically activate. Else it can get stuck when you try to us it. His did and he ended up having to tear apart the front differential to get it fixed and working. (Relube and then replace the solenoid.)

Now, around the first of the month, I'll take the Tundra out on a straight road and engage the 4x4 HIGH and drive for about a mile. (You don't want to be on hard pavement with the old-school 4x4 and make turns but I heard the new Tacoma system isn't that sensitive and allows some slippage when turning on hard pavement....but I, still, wouldn't risk it.)

Ohh thats terrible.. so i can expect to take it back in again?!? Im guessing they replaced with the same faulty part

Then whoever they have working on it is probably a noob....no way those go out that fast. Do you have another Toyota dealer you can go to? I'd go there and ask for the most experienced Master Technician to troubleshoot instead of just doing the parts-cannon crap.
