Toyota gave the Canadian buyers the option for a factory block heater, but wouldnt allow it in America from the dealer.

Their reason is potential fires, but that is entirely subject to proper installation, the use of heat sink paste on the element, the use of dielectric grease on the connections, securing the connections and plugging into a properly protected circuit. Ive never had, or heard of a block heater fire, but i can see an idiot installation ruining it for all of us. The dumb thing is, they installed an oil pan and battery heater at the dealer. They are just as subject to improper installation and fire as a block heater.

Up here in interior Alaska, a block heater is 100% necessary. Its mandatory for the longevity of your expensive purchase. It was -30° yesterday.

The dealers here would not offer me the part number, but i managed to find the part number through canada, and get it delivered to the US. Here is the part numbers on the first page, and the factory installation manual.

Block Heater installation directions & part numbers [PDF]

I ordered everything, but ended up omitting one of the cables, as i connected it to a three way pigtail that was already installed under the hood.

The hole port is located on the drivers side, right where the transmission and engine block meet,

Check my post out again. They are not offering Engine block heaters in the US market. Kendall was barred from giving me the part number over some dumb decision, most likely based on bad installations.

Only Canadian Toyotas were allowed the block heater from the factory. Theres nothing magic in Canada preventing bad installation, so it makes no sense. I had to research, make alot of phone calls, just to find the part numbers. Toyota was hiding it, and only available through Canadian dealers, hence this post with the part numbers and installation.

Unless they changed the policy in the last month, Kendall aint doing it.

Are they doing an oil pan heater pad? For some retarded reason, theyre allowed that.

You ever look into the super low pour point oils for the extreme cold, or does the block heater and oil pan heater make this unnecessary? The oil these guys sell has a pour point down to -72F:

Premium Plus Passenger Car Engine Oil – Advanced Lubrication, Inc.

You'd want to run it to at least 10k miles to make the cost reasonable.

I use amsoil, it has a pretty low pour point. But a warm engine will always be better for wear. The block heater radiates and also warms the trans, as i verified with a scan tool. When it was -20 out recently, i hooked the scan tool up while the block heater was plugged in all night. If i remember, the trans oil temp was +30°f

did you install it? does it open up into the coolant? on the older 3.5 V6 it had a hole without entering the coolant passages, so it heated the block without heating the coolant. easy install. did you route like the instructions call for? maybe I should read the install instructions :)

Both gens do heat the coolant. The casting tube it slides into protrudes into the coolant passage. Picture a metal "finger" cast into the coolant passage, of which you slide the heater like a finger into a glove.

I did not route it like the instructions. The instructions cut into the bumper. I connected it into a three way that exits the front grill.

No. As i mentioned, its a solid tube. The instructions will tell you how to do it.

As noted in the beginning of the thread, toyota US doesnt sell it. Not sure if they changed their mind since last year, but i ordered it from a canadian dealership to the US. I dont remember which one. It was a year ago. The part numbers are on the instructions.
