This is the first winter with my Tacoma. And what a winter. I have a long gravel driveway that is mostly snow-covered with packed snow. I noticed when I am in 4H and I turn all the way to the left to turn down my driveway the front tires are really fighting the turn. It feels more like when you accidentally leave it in 4H on dry asphalt. I also have a 2001 Tundra 4x4 that I still use to plow my driveway. I don't get that same fighting feeling when I make that sharp turn with my Tundra in 4H. I just wondered if others have noticed this and if it is just normal for the 4WD system that the Tacoma uses.

The short answer is yes, this appears to be normal, but it’s the worst system I have ever had. Both my older Toyotas had manual transfer cases and this is my first experience with an electronic 4WD system. (I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, or it’s just the design of the front drive system. The clunk on start up is another ,

it takes a lot of nuance to use this truck in 4WD for sure. I’m in the same boat. 300’ gravel driveway with an incline and lots of snow and ice. It
really hard to turn around and I never go anywhere near full lock on the steering wheel. I am resolved to the fact Igoing to have some six point turns to reverse course.

I live in serious snow country and need a 4WD and it t took me a while to get used to this and learn its limitations. (2025 SR5)

The 2001 Tundra is push button 4H/4L.

I even have those Z cable "chains" on my Tundra tires and the turning in 4H is smoother.

I think It could be new tires more grip and are not able to slip when turning . I have tundra 07 and 24 tacoma . Even in snow tundra turns around easy but tacoma take effort . Tundra tires are almost 50 percent used less grip as compared to 24 tacoma

Maybe. I only know Toyotas as far as 4WD behavior on snow. Someday I will need to transfer the plow setup to the Tacoma when the Tundra dies. Hope it will function as well as the Tundra has for plowing these last 13 winters.
