Absolute best tire for highway fuel mileage? Best answer to date is factory installed Michelin Primacy LTX

You're asking a sport sedan engine to move a pickup. The sedans are 2/3 the weight and shaped for aero lmao. Kind of stunning the 4 banger turbo makes such good low-end torque and sits at about 2/3 the gas mileage

Nothing about the T24A-FTS makes it a sport sedan engine. The previous gen 2GR-FKS was the car engine, and was infact in the Camry XSE/TRD and Lexus ES350/IS350/RC350 domestically. It was also in several JDM Toyota sedans, Avalon, Aurion, Crown, and even the Lotus Evora... the 2GR was really not made for trucks lol anyone who says the 2GR is a better power plant than the T24A-FTS for Tacoma is coping

There are no T24A-FTS variants in a sedan, only body on frame SUVs, trucks and unibody SUVs.

It's about as far as you can get from a sporty engine. If you put the T24A-FTS in a sports car it would be one of the most boring sports car ever thanks to the extremely undersquare stroke.

Well crap as that make 100 sense!
Now I have to bring it down A LOT, as I never looked @ the recommended PSI as it was close to 38 when purchased.

I just assumed it they were supposed to be 35 PSI like the last many vehicles I have purchased.
Of course we know root of "assume"...

So now what are most people running?
I googled and did see that Toyota airs tires up high for transportation on the car haulers.
Should have been adjusted at the dealer.
Guessing I will drop to 32psi. She has been great for 22k miles and tires look great thus far. She may ride better now!

You'll also get the service techs overinflating the tires too.

On my third gen I've generally stuck to door decal +1 or 2psi. I've had good tire life with even wear.

I knew exactly what we wanted, which was the Tacoma with the known fuel mileage.

Thread was started just to see if I can make what wife drives (yes a truck and her 1st truck) get better MPG when the time comes, is all!

We get 1 new vehicle every 4 years to have one very reliable do all vehicle that wife drives 99% of the time as well as vacation.

I personally have company paid transportation for work, as well as some older trucks and garage full of Harleys, 1 classic muscle car.

Do not need something else with better fuel mileage. Nor an added vehicle for her to drive cheaper just to add cost.

Had actually planned @ this age with house and everything paid for (OTHER than Tacoma now...) to have a new reliable truck for me when needed. It almost came thru, but with the cost of a very nice vehicle for wife and a 2nd for me, just didn't add up when I only do about 3k miles a year on my truck.

Aaaaaaand most importantly, she likes it!

Now @ 22k miles.

Was averaging 15 to 18mpg when new. (Using calculator)

Now she is fairly constant over 21mpg as it slowly trended up.

Only mod was removing plastic under front end. Did it help? Really not sure as it was constantly trending better and better.

Anyway anyone have any experience with tires and improved fuel economy?

Was thinking about a slightly taller tire to reduce rpms on highway, but there truly is a science in efficiency and I pray Toyota did that already. But for what speed as our average is 77 to 78mph....
Then there is the issue in tire weight, as spinning weight is a MONSTER as it spins up..

Wife drives 90 miles a day for her work. She has been @ 23 to 24mpg with a +400 range for years in her prior 3 Ford Explorer Limiteds.

Just trying to get more from Tacoma.

After 22k miles and a recent trip traveling over 1000 miles on vacation in just last 8 months we both find the comfort of the Tacoma better than the Ford Explorer Limited.

Only thing the Explorer had was it would run circles around this power train (regular plain v6 non-turbo) and get better fuel mileage with RANGE! We had 0 issues with any of them with well over 200k on each of them.

Pray the Tacoma proves to be as close to reliable, as I believe it will.

Swapped to Tacoma to be able to haul more (in comfort) to where kids moved far away.

Our experience with the Primacy models vs Michlin's newer year-round 3PMSF models across 3 vehicles in the family is slight gains in fuel economy were not worth the general or overall mediocrity. That series is for sure quiet and predictable but in our case not worth the the noticeably worse performance for wet, dirt and very much craptacular winter performance.

Knowing Michelin owns BF Goodrich, their Trail Terrain TA with an OEM version on TRD OR is 3PMSF in replacement versions and I've been surprisingly pleased with the OEM version.

For having to drive 90 miles a day I can't imagine wanting to do that with our Tacoma if I didn't have to. It has done well for my business when projects require periods of driving more, but it is a light truck. Given the choice I much prefer our car. For several years our Sienna was fantastic for needing utility and power with road manners. It worked really well to combine that with occasional truck or trailer rental.

I feel the 4th gen Tacoma is pretty great as a light truck, but absolutely the wrong choice for good fuel mileage and handling.

If Ford can do better with full size much more powerful trucks, surely Toyota can do better with a smaller brick!

I had a 2019 F150 with the 2.7 and my average was 18.1. With the Tacoma running the same routes, I'm getting 22.3. I haven't had any long highway travels, so I only expect it to go up.

I get 21 in my 2018 F150, 5.0, 4 door, 4x4 on highway @ 77 and average 23 when just running around @ 55 and below (country miles). Just about exact same as the wife's new Tacoma.
Which is fine but was NOT fine for 1st 10 tanks of fuel @ 17mph. Just pray she keeps trending up!
