Bed cam and rearview mirror cam extension

Has anyone put a topper on the back and used ggoffroad to extend the cables so the bed cam can see the back and rearview mirror camera is no longer being blocked by the topper?
I would be interested in doing that.

Do you have the cameras in the OEM third brake light assembly? If so, access to the cabling will be a bit more involved.

I have the GG offroad camera relocation kit in my topper. For me it works awesome 95% of the time and the other 5% could be fixed with a little more effort to secure cords better than I have them now.

Hi,
I plan to retain the digital rear view mirror and have purchased the GGOFFROAD harness. However, I am opting to leave the original camera in place for possible future use. Instead I purchased thru Toyota.oempartsonline.com a second camera (part # 867C0-AK010) and harness (#86797-0C360). The latter will plug in under the rear headliner.

I am stalling on the install at the moment, as I haven’t decided between mounting the camera on the real door of my Alu-Cab Contour Canopy or onto (a yet to be determined) canopy rack such as Prinsu’s.

This method would work well for anyone who already has a rack or canopy mounted on the truck and doesn’t have access to the cab’s rear brakelight/camera assembly .

This is why I asked the OP if they had the premium package with the cameras in the third brake light. I am installing an aftermarket digital rear view camera but want to use the clean OEM third brake light cameras.
If I were extending the OEM camera, I would buy a third brake light with no cameras and bring the extension camera cable through that light.

The GG Offroad kit comes with stuff to seal the spaces left by taking the original cameras out if you dont want to spend the extra to buy an aditional set of cameras and the cords have plenty of length to go out through the bottom of the cab and come back up in the bed. Trying to go through the light seems like a good way to end up with a leak sooner or later. GG Offroad also has been known to work with people who emailed them about custom mounts. So if you end up with a strange place you need to mount or route it to try sending them an email and see if they can help.

@Gaspe I have mine mounted with the suction cup to the inside of the cap window and when it's looking straight back if a short car pulls way up on me (like to an unsafe level) I have to use the controls on the mirror to point it down to see them. Usually only happens at red lights but some idiots tailgate hard on the road too. If you do go for a high mounting point just test to make sure the controls can bring the view low enough to see people who are tailgating you hard if you need it to.

Thats one of my few frustations, with the camera and software itself rather than the extension kit. It was designed to have to look over the bed so it struggles with very close vehicles when mounted further back. I know it can see more but the programming wont let you zoom out more you have to move around the full view using the controlls to pan. I've condidered buying some of the lenses you can mount to smart phone cameras that make them wide angle to see if that could get me a little more field of view.

My Alu-Cab Contour Canopy already has a rear brake light wired in. I’m hoping to regain the digital rear view mirror with the extra camera - all wired inside and under the vehicle, without disturbing the rear brake light/camera assembly on the back of the cab and risking leaks…..

Yeah, you can absolutely add a second camera instead of relocating the factory camera. You'd leave your factory camera where it is in the third brake light, buy a second OEM camera plus a second Toyota short harness (86797-0C360 — that harness is the piece people forget, our extension doesn't plug straight into the camera), and mount the second camera on your topper. Our extension runs from the same connector at the CHMSL out to it. Physical routing is the same as a normal install — along the headliner, down the passenger C-pillar, under the rear seat, out the factory floor grommet, along the frame and up into the bed.

The thing worth thinking about is where you put your swap point. If you terminate at the headliner you're dropping the headliner every time you switch, which is fine once a year and miserable more often than that. Better move for the DRV camera is to run the extension straight to the back of the mirror instead — both feeds end up there and you swap by popping the trim panel behind the mirror, couple minutes. Some folks bring both connections down to a junction behind the C-pillar instead, same idea. Bed camera is harder since there's no easy connector besides the headliner one, so most people just leave that set to whichever setup they run most.

We are looking at providing a quick disconnect mid-cable, although we are testing heavily due to concerns about signal integrity. Let us know if that's something y'all are interested in because that feedback will help us get something on the market.

@FossilHunter - we are working on a guide to mount in a way to retain FMSS 111 - basically ensuring you have a similar view to the original and not missing details such as cars on your tailgate. We should have that info ready in a couple weeks, so reach out if you want to see it.

Good info on the camera harness... when I bought my dual camera third brake light I was sure to get one with the harness attached. That said...I am having a difficult time finding a part number for the grille camera, that camera uses a different connector from the rear cameras. Do you have a part number for the grille camera?
