Collar vs spring lift/Suspension lift questions

Looking for some clarification on the differences between preload collars and springs. Are there any obvious cons to either one? I’m looking to achieve either level or slight negative rake. Was looking at either the Westcott preload collar or dobinson c59-820 springs. Would I also need different springs in the back?

Both will give you lift. I can’t say as to how Westcott’s or any other preload collar lift rides. Some say they retained the factory ride and some say that their truck rides worse. I went with Dobinon c59-822 (front)and c59-869v(rear). Gave me about a 2” front and 1” rear lift and to me it rides better and takes some bumps better than the stock springs. Either one you go with you will probably need a spring compressor to install or have someone install it for you. Probably an alignment as well. Best of luck with your choice.

Honestly I can't say I can tell much of a difference between "preload collars" and spacer lifts. Either way they do the same, the force the spring into compression which stiffens it up forcing the truck higher. The downside, is typically a rougher ride, and reduced travel in suspensions where the spring is the limiting factor. Lift coils typically have a similar effect because overall travel isn't increased so they rely on a different spring rate, or a taller spring under more compression to gain the same lift. Although a stiffer spring of the same height won't limit travel. Compared to a complete strut replacement which uses a shock with longer stroke (travel) and taller springs to gain lift. (This is only the case in the front as they strut assemblies/coil overs which are a closed travel system)

As for the rears, taller springs or spacers can be used without effecting ride quality but the shocks will limit down travel and repeated over extension could damage them. But that's not typically an issue with the inch or so spacers provide.


Either option you gave I'd also invest in a reinforcement plate for the top of the front struts. They're already weak.

I agree with the reinforcement plate. Westcott has a couple options and Icon has one as well. I went with Icon just because it was available first.
