Hey yall, I’ve lurked this forum for awhile since I got my 4G in May of 24!

I was one of the lucky *ugh* few who had a shite transmission (8 speed AT) that blew in the first 1500 miles.

Since then I’ve been riding on my second transmission which hasn’t blown but has some quirks…

I’ve been saving up for the usual mods (wheels, tires, lift, etc) and want to go bigger on my tires first thing. Only issue is I’m skeptical because of this tranny issue with bigger tires over temping/cooking trans fluid due to their size and rotational mass.

I guess I’m hoping yall can ease my mind on this.

PS: pros and cons of 33s vs 34s vs 35s would be super appreciated!

I’ve got 14K miles on (285 70 r17) 33’s. No noticeable difference with engine/trans temps, or power. About 1 to 1.5 mpg loss. If I were to go bigger I’d go 255/80 or 85 to keep the weight down and aid clearance.

Quirks? I don’t know, but my trans is a little jerky until it warms up, not bad but noticeable. When it’s warm super smooth. I do feel some downshifting when slowing down, but nothing rough by my standards? I think you may be hyper sensitive cause you had a problem? I was for awhile when the TSB came out but got over it 👍

Thanks for the quick reply! I love the look of 35s on this gen but know it’d be easier to slap 33s in. I’d be willing to sacrifice hella MPG to have a slick truck :)

I agree that I probably pay too much attention to the trans. My 3rd gen had the gearhunting and my truck before that blew its transfer case lol!

I put alot of miles on, and didn’t want to deal with 15mpg with a 18.5 gallon fuel tank 🤣

About the only thing I’ll miss from stock is going to be getting 21 mpg here around town lol

I'm not catching your functional reasons for this? My point in asking is the stock tires on a TRD OR are near 32 o.d. and as one who is off road a lot much of that doing work, I find the stock TRD OR to be incredibly capable compared to past times when a rig did need some modifications. The whole rig actually.

I totally get how some modifications make sense, but my associates in the trail building and ski area crew always seem to be using our rigs off road and often in more extremes than many but we can keep our rigs to still be civil on roadways, not do anything to risk a warranty issue, not hit fuel economy and keep better vehicle handling.

One other observation is so many mods associates past and present have done hurt road handling, fuel economy, noise and braking. I've had 33 BFG TA tires and they're pretty crappy in rain and snow over the 3PMSF more all around and the stock Trail Terrain TA.

Same here. While in the big picture, it's fine, I do wish is was a bit smoother. Mine is a Nov 2024 build.

I have 25 hybrid. When you put it in reverse if you're not perfectly stopped, there is a clunk in the trans. I notice it when parking backwards and reverse is accomplished with the electric motor (engine off). No other issue on trans. Truck came with 265/65 R18, I went up 33 with 275/70 R18. No rub or modifications. I also changed wheels to 9" wide making the tire look wider (+25 offset). Before city mpg was 19, now 15.8. I used Bridgestone dueler ascent, rides the same. I have BF goodrich k02 on F150, much harder ride when going over bumps and pot holes. Supposedly K03 are better. More baja desert races have been won with BF Goodrich, but I don't think I'll be going there, 99.99% street driving. Just upgraded for the looks. Good Luck.

What’s your transmission doing? Can you elaborate please?
It’s just extremely jerky under braking and also acceleration. Also makes a wicked clunking like another person said. It also has trouble keeping it in the proper gear on highway cruising too. Completely usable but really annoying imo lol.

Yeah mines the same way, clunks, jerks, vibrates and shudders all at low speeds.

I agree it’s extremely capable. I’ve hit some pretty tough trails bone stock and kept up just fine. For me it’d just be cosmetic for the most part but I think at least some more aggressive tires would be nice. My 3rd gen had some Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs (attached)and they were shit in the rain but I didn’t mind cause that truck looked awesome to me.
Imo Toyota made this truck pretty good bone stock, but who wants to be boring and basic staying bone stock lol

I have 285 70 17... It makes a big difference in the looks... My transmission is also jerkey... I'm in the TSB range... It seems to smooth out after it's warmed up but I always get a jerky 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd studder....It definitely drives different than other vehicles I've owned...bigger tires didn't change the way it drives just my mpg... Worth the trade off....
