hmmm i lost a radiator in my 2001 1st gen Taco due to the huge gaps in the stock grill that a rock got thru .

Decided to give this a try. It doesn’t block much of the grille, but it blocks the bottom front entry, and I do get a lot of gravel and bees in there…. This was a very easy installation.

I was being careful not to over tighten to avoid deformation of the OEM plastic grille trim that the brackets sit in front of on their midsection.

One thing I realized was that I could micro adjust the brackets up and down, not just side to side, to get the best fit. But things still shifted slightly while tightening, so I had to back off a tad, then tightened a little at a time on each bolt.

The silver hardware that comes in this kit looks ugly IMO, so fortunately I had a black hardware kit on hand with M2 button head bolts. They were just slightly longer with a couple of extra threads, but that didn’t matter because there was enough open space behind the bolt holes. Pic of hardware kit is included, which I bought on Amazon for $19.99 USD. For a link to Lexland’s kit, look at the beginning of this thread. They also posted a link to their website and a forum discount, but Amazon may be lower cost through another seller (that’s how I got mine; link is also below.)

Agree 100%! We keep hearing they’re shady AF. This too-expensive, couple of thin bits of black-painted, framed wire with bolt holes will work well until such time as I decide on a possible winch bumper.

i feel it is insurance on the inter cooler
i lost a rad in a gen 1 had to get towed & missed a days work . The Gen 1's have huge openings in that grill
so yeah rocks happen
i wish they made a nylon net that we could add behind the main grill

Its funny people are just now discussing this sort of thing in 2026. Every car ever made has had this issue clear back to when we first went to liquid cooling. Even motorcycles are predominantly liquid cooled now and have the same issue. Any form of heat exchanger has to be made if thin/soft materials because of the thermal transfer properties of different metals. You can't really use steel even though its cheaper. Brass, copper, and aluminum have always been the required materials.

Interesting enough though, the only engines which typically offer any kind of protection from debris are on the slowest moving vehicles, tractors. Mesh screens have been standard use for decades. Although not typically strong enough for impact protection, they are actually for grass and leaves. They move so slowly and hardly ever see the road so having a screen to prevent foliage from clogging up the radiator is quite handy. They also move so slowly in dusty conditions I have specific water hose attachments for blowing the dirt and mud that builds up in the cooling pack, and an air one to dry it after.
