Big Turbo Tacoma – Development Update

Wanted to share an update on a project a lot of people have been asking about.

We’re currently working with FAFRacing on a big top-mount turbo kit for the 2025 non-hybrid Tacoma. This is a full ground-up setup, not a pieced-together upgrade, and it’s being developed with tuning in mind from day one.

The kit will include:
  • Custom intake
  • Aluminum charge piping
  • Custom intercooler
  • Custom catted downpipe
  • Top-mount big turbo configuration
On the tuning side, we’re deep into calibration development—boost control, airflow modeling, torque management, and drivability are all being addressed as part of the process. The goal is not just peak numbers, but a setup that’s repeatable, predictable, reliable and usable in the real world.

This is an active development project, and while there’s still work to be done, the kit is expected to be released in the coming months. As things progress, we’ll share more data and real results.

More to come.

Btw, out of curiosity, why did you not utilize any sort of airbox? The aftermarket ones available already allow for the usage of a cone style filter like that but still maintain segregation from the hot engine compartment. Is there plans to develop one in the future or is there a specific reason? Also, how are you managing boost control? Since a turbo change is of course the largest potential power addition, do you forsee any issues outrunning the cooling system under sustained high loads such as offloading or towing?

But most importantly, after an upgrade like this just how much cowbell we talking here potentially? Looking to match the hybrid trucks around 325ish hp? 400hp? 500hp? I'd personally like to get my truck to right around 400hp reliably and am curious if this "kit" would put it there.

Good questions — I’ll try to hit each one clearly.

On the intake side: the current development setup uses a custom intake rather than a sealed airbox. An airbox may be explored in a future revision, but it isn’t part of the current plan. That said, Nick (the fabricator) may offer different intake variations down the road, including options that allow compatibility with existing aftermarket intakes like SXTH Element or Banks.

For boost control, we’re retaining the factory boost control strategy. All OEM torque, load, and safety management features remain in place. The goal is to work within Toyota’s control logic so drivability and protection remain intact as power is increased.

Engine cooling has not proven to be a limitation in testing. The intercooler uses a Bell core, which is among the best available on the market, and charge air temperatures are well controlled. From a thermal standpoint, the system is being developed with sustained load use in mind.

As for power expectations: this turbo is fully capable of supporting 450–500 wheel horsepower. That said, we’ll be increasing output incrementally and validating each step rather than jumping straight to peak numbers. Nick's truck is serving as the development platform, and no customer kits or calibrations will be released until the setup has been thoroughly proven.

This is an active development project, and we’ll continue to share real-world data as testing progresses.

I’m super down for a setup like this. Love that its all in one kit. I’d just need the accessport. I definitely look forward to reading the follow ups on this.

@Cameron When will you guys start posting potential pricing on the kit?

I actually just had a long phone call with the fabricator. There are many variables here so he is not ready to make any public pricing yet. We are going to make sure that everything is perfect from the mechanical and tuning side. Then he will look at the impact of volume production and we'll be pricing it very competitively for what you will get.

How much of a MPG hit do you think will happen on just normal driving.
I'm well aware of this question being subjective. I used to have a G8 that I made into a 650hp beast and got 12 MPH after it was all said and done.
Just curious what kind of hit the MPGs might take.

Depends on if you "use" the extra power. In theory because it's a turbo change, unless you use it it shouldn't hurt the mpg at all. The tune could of course. But of course if you install the kit and start getting spirited with it....

Sometimes going a little bit bigger on the turbo can have a positive effect on gas mileage because it is not so quick to get into boost. However since this has an aftermarket catted downpipe we are still seeing full boost by about 3,000 rpm. Your gas mileage will be highly dependent on your right foot

Thank you for your answers.
I noticed in the original post how you highlighted the "cat" in the downpipe. Now you mentioned it again. What's so important about this "cat"?
There's one in the exhaust down stream already.
