Help: "EPB Activation Stopped Incompletely" Error After Rear Caliper Replacement

Hoping to lean on the collective expertise of this group so I can get my truck back up and running ASAP. I ran into a snag while doing my rear brakes and the truck's computer is currently locking me out.


Here is the timeline of what happened:

• I am replacing my rear pads and rotors. I already had the passenger rear pads and rotor off when I realized I forgot to put the truck into service mode.

• I tried putting it into service mode using the manual switch sequence, but I got an error every time I tried.

• Since I was stuck, I tried to mechanically push the caliper piston in by removing the electronic parking brake (EPB) motor and undoing the internal screw. However, when I was pushing the piston in with a clamp, there was a loud “clunk” noise, something shifted in the piston, and brake fluid started pouring out.

• I’ve since ordered a brand-new caliper and installed it, bled all 4 brake lines, and reinstalled the EPB motor.

The Current Issue:


I now get an "EPB Activation Stopped Incompletely" error every single time I turn the truck on (see attached ⁠image⁠).

• I’m still unable to put the truck into service mode, so I haven't been able to do the driver's side yet.

• When I engage and disengage the parking brake using the center console switch, I can hear the motor engage and disengage sounding normal.

• Despite the motors working mechanically, I consistently get this error “EBP Activation Stopped Incompletely” and it never shows on the dash that the parking brake is successfully engaged.

I’m planning to continue working on it tonight and am wondering: is this just a hard error code I can wipe/recalibrate with a Carista OBD2 (I have the basic dongle but an active paid app subscription), or is there something else I’m missing?

I think I would try the carista to clear the code and see what that does for you.

Now I have to admit what's this talk about putting it in service mode? Looks like I needed to look in the owners manual to learn more about this.

Any vehicle that has an electronic parking brake (EPB) must be put in service mode in order to not damage the electronic actuator that engages the brake. Service mode retracts the pistons like you normally would on any other caliper.

Sounds like OP may have damaged the actuator.

Thanks for the lesson. Will the owners manual explain how to do this or do I need to dig deeper into the forums?

Reset but you might need a more advanced reader than carista. Autel makes an advanced one that my friend uses at his shop. He’s come across this before and resetting the brake system seems to get rid of the message.
