Yeah, I think the truck's programmed to keep a minimum amount of energy in the batteries: 2-3 out of 8 bars, and not to treat the batteries like a backup unit where we'd want to keep it fully charged.

That in mind, what I think makes sense for camping and other trips is to bring a backup battery (DJI, Pecron, Ecoflow, etc.) that you use, and just use the truck as a generator to recharge that battery as needed.

It's not perfect, my ideal would be a 'prime' plugin trailhunter that I could use as a battery and partially recharge with solar (and while we're at it, let's make it a diesel electric series hybrid too ) --- but I think this is the way to use it that makes sense. Sounds like the truck is better used as a generator and not as energy storage.

good info @trailhunger; didn't consider that.

What does ā€˜prime’ mean regarding vehicles?
It's Toyota's label for any of their hybrid vehicles that have a plug-in charging ability.

Example:
RAV4 = mild hybrid, system just boosts range
RAV4 Prime = plug-in hybrid with about 40mi of all electric range
