I'm new to modding my tacoma. My last one, a 2016 TRD off-road was my first, so I didn't really do much with it other than tires. One thing that's always been on my mind is how people pay for all these awesome mods. I know people don't like sharing their salaries for the most part so I'll stop short of saying how can everyone afford this stuff, but I would like to have people chime in on what their strategy is to pay for their mods. I'm a software engineer that makes a decent salary (I'll call it low 6 figures) but I do have a mortgage and regular monthly responsibilities. I'm sure I'm not the only one but I'm constantly fighting the urge to just charge my next crazy mod idea! lol. What does everyone else do when they get mod fever?!

Totally agree but I see some of these posts when people are like "Just got my tacoma" then list like 20 mods they made right away lol.

I think like any hobby, you have to save your money and spend according to what makes sense for you and your situation.

Personally, my truck is my highest priority hobby (and always has been) so I set aside some money in savings for truck mods. Of course, my mortgage, bills, food, and family expenses all come first but whatever is left over I set some aside and spend on my truck. Some mods have to wait until there's money saved up for them.

Also, it's very hard to compare yourself to others because everyone's situation is so unique. I live in a high cost of living area, but I bought my house when the market was down and interest rates were below 3%... I've also been in my house for over 10 years so my mortgage is pretty affordable compared to others. This leaves extra money to spend on hobbies.

I waited 6 months for my Tacoma to arrive at the dealer. In that time I saved up money and bought the first mods I wanted to do. I started adding things to my truck the first week I had it.

Don’t go into debt to mod your truck and it’s probably a better idea to pay it off before you crazy with mods. I just buy things as I see a use case for them.

This is my first vehicle where I’ve gotten a bit of mod fever. Currently there aren’t too many 4G Tacoma’s in my area, however, I’m sure in time there will be so It’s nice to have so many options and opportunities to make the truck your own. It’s definitely addicting but hey, can’t take it with ya right?!

I feel like I've activated responsible adults on this thread. I'm on the same page as all these comments so far. I'm just curious how the other half lives. The "just got my truck, did 30 mods right away" half 😆

One thing about appearance mods, they're really only for you to appreciate. Many owners change things up thinking, "hey they'll think this looks really neat". When in reality, 99.99999999% of the people on the road don't even notice your truck, or if they do...."nice looking truck", and 5 seconds later they're thinking about tonight's dinner.

Ben, don't forget this forum has over 5000 members. I would imagine there are a few who have money to burn and a few who are deeply in debt and, many more, who make mods as they can afford them. I am in the latter group, though, I am past being tempted by most mods anyway, translation: I'm older now...LOL. If I were to purchase a mod these days, I would have saved for it and pay cash now.

Wise words, definitely!
