SUPER LONG READ THIS JUST EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPEND WHEN MINE REPLACED COPIED FROM ANOTHER THREAD.

Hello all, writing this to see if anybody else has had this issue as well as make everybody aware of what I’m having going on.

Driving today in the middle of driving, the transmission went to shift and it jolted the car so hard it scared me. It was almost as if I slammed on the brakes as hard as I could, and then continued to drive normally got to where I was going with no further issues and I’ve been parked the truck and left it.

Got back in it, not even 20 minutes later to leave, and as I was shifting from Park to drive it was jolting really hard more so than normal there’s usually a little bit of a jolt. I get that but pushing the truck forward

I tried shifting from reverse to drive multiple times and it repeated the issue

As I was driving back to where I was going, that same thing happened three times that happened earlier, where it jolted the entire truck in the middle of driving or what almost felt like slamming on the brakes or a really rough shift. It’s kinda hard to explain the entire truck felt like it got slammed for a second and then kept going

Twice when it happened, it happened as I was slowing down and it was a really, really really hard shift.

Then when I got where I was going, and I parked, and I switched between driving and reverse and parked, it was acting perfectly fine.

I apologize for the long ride up. I have an appointment tomorrow. Will keep you guys updated. Please let me know if anybody has had a similar issue.

UPDATE: I just received a call back my transmission was throwing no codes, and they tried replacing the fluid and flushing it and trying that to see if it resolved the issue.

However, none of it did and there is no code.

But the text said and I quote “ there is definitely something wrong with it”
Sent it off to Toyota and they said just replace the whole thing. Said hopefully ill have it back in a week or two.

UPDATE
Got the truck back yesterday few things I want to note.

I don’t have the paper work in my hand but it stated that the psi going thru the transmission was incorrect however it didn’t state what caused the failure.

Cost out of pocket would have been 12,500$

The truck shifts the smoothest it ever has even when I got it new (yes the transmission is obviously new now) but even the cold start first shift is gone at least in this sense it was before it’s barley noticeable compared to any other time it shifts.

This of course can all change I’ve only put 40 miles on the new trans but like I said before it feels different even compared to when I got the truck new.

Makes me think
1.My transmission was always funky and I didn’t know it
2. Toyota made some type of change and we don’t know about it
3. This take will be completely irrelevant when I start my truck next and it launches me into the atmosphere the first time it shifts.

All in all replacement went well here’s to hoping it’s the last one!

I have a whole forum explaining in more detail however super short explanation.

My transmission went out at 7000k

I had the overheating issues I did notice that switching to s and locking it at 2 or 3 depending helped with the heat off-road I have NOT gone on a trip since it’s been replaced.

I DID have the shift jerkiness after a cold start that COMPLETELY went away after being replaced.

So far anyways been a couple months and 2k miles

The trans overheating issues has been mostly thought to be the torque converter not locking up the way it’s supposed to so switching to s helps lock it.

Or they are bad time will tell hopefully we all find out more eventually but who knows
Was your truck in the recall batch with debris issues, or did it always have that weird shifting problem? I noticed mine was doing this odd 2-3 shift when new. I always thought it was the computer trying to learn the driving habits etc. I have to wonder if there Is a bad batch of torque converters that are contributing to the overheating issues? Honestly I don't even know how they would test for this. Really good insight btw!

Mine was not in that batch separate issue they didn’t bother digging deeper to diagnose the exact failure as Toyota corporate told them to just swap the trans after they told them the symptoms.

I always had the cold start shift and was told it was normal

I know overheating is semi common unsure if it’s a software or hardware issue as the truck wants to keep rpms as low as possible all the time the constant shifting increases heat.

So we went to the dealership and explained the overheating transmission concerns driving up mt. washingron which is a paved road with multiple switch backs making 4low risky with drive train binding.
The dealership cleaned off the exterior transmission thermostat because of oil undercoating possibly causing binding? This wasn't covered under warranty of course and was $360. They did say it was refundable if it didn't fix the issue which is good.
Now we drove up mt pack Monadnock which is much less severe but is still paved with multiple switchbacks and the transmission overheated again. It was a sunny 60F day driving up in drive in normal mode with extra light throttle not pushing the engine whatsoever with a 9 year old in the back seat. It took 21 minutes revving the engine in park to bring the transmission temps back down to the middle. If I could switch to 4low without the binding I would have, but these trucks don't allow disengaging the front hubs like the old trucks.
I'm going back to the dealership next week, but I don't know if this is a transmission issue, or programming issue, or cooler issue. The master mechanic said when he tested the transmission the temps spiked up quickly, but the fluid didn't look burned etc when I brought it in originally. I'm worried for obviously the life of the drive train, being able to use the truck for actual work, and to be able to bring my little one on these fun trips with the family. This was one of the big reasons we bought the trd offroad non hybrid model....

Try Tow Haul mode next time and shift in S mode.

***Update***
Dealership has reviewed computer and determined that an overheat didn't occur according to ROB data. They did say to keep watching it and let them know if it continues to run hot like this.

On a side note for anyone that has a skid plate. I have a rival skid plate with the oil filter acces door and a valvomax quick oil drain plug. I let the service writer know and gave them the drain adapter fitting for the 12 month service which includes an oil change. The service writer was skeptical of the drain system and said it might void warranty. They also watched the technician drain the oil with the adapter and remove the oil filter without issue. They said it didn't spill a drop of oil and they didn't have to pull the skid plate. Technician and service writer were both happy making it easier and faster for the staff. A big win all around...
