Based on the Oil Geek's UOA on his SR5's diff oil changed at 5000mi I decided to do it earlier than the 30,000mi I was planning. I really don't have any regrets at all. As you can see from the photos, there was some metal in there that was probably from manufacturing that was caught by the magnet doing it's job. However, when pouring the used oil out, you can see that it is absolutely saturated with glitter. This is typical for break-in but TOG shows a stat that 82% of part wear is due to particulate contamination, so I'm glad to have done it when I did. If I could do it all over again I would've done it at 5000 miles and then again at 30,000 miles. As with everything, your mileage may vary and you do what you want, but I thought some might be interested in seeing what's going on in there especially if they were possibly gonna skip/delay the 30,000 mile differential oil change. Don't forget there's one in the front too.

Thanks for the info

Last vehicle I did at 1500 miles, I was amazed at particulates at bottom of pumpkin, on the magnet and in the fluid. I did it again to see if the break in had settle down at 2500 miles and it had not. I think I'm gonna do first one on the Tacoma at 2500 miles.

Did you remove cover or just drain?

I did a drain and fill. Just to get it done today since I had time I used the Valvoline Advanced Full Syn which is a 75W-90 vs 85 (it’s on sale at NAPA for $40 for a gallon). I’m planning to let that circulate a bit for the next 5 to 6000 miles and then at the 30,000 mile mark change it again. Will likely use the correct viscosity since I have some time to get it ordered at a reasonable price between now and then. May drop the cover this time to make sure it’s all out but I think it’ll probably be fine just doing another drain & fill.
