I realized the stock 245's on the SR5 were reading faster speeds than every GPS I've compared it to, as well as my dash cam. All three gps's I compared were spot on. I also did multiple distance tests with with the gps's, and the truck always registered more miles than traveled.

I've since changed over to the same 265 tire size that's on the trd models, and now all gps speeds and distance tests match up perfectly.

Now, as such, it seems the vehicle is calibrated from the factory to the trd tire size, which would mean my odometer was reading more than the actual mileage traveled....which of course would mean my factory 35,000 mile warranty was short changed.

When I first got the truck, I noticed the mileage was increasing quite rapidly, now, after the tire change, it shifts WAY better and the miles creep up.

Im sure I won't get far, but I'm going to contact toyota about short issuing me miles on my warranty. This has to be not quite legal, as the miscalibration is from the factory. Maybe if more people complain, it could potentially get somewhere. Who knows.

I have noticed the same thing on my TRD Off Road. The speedometer always reads 1 or 2 mph higher; I have not checked the odometer. I was thinking once I changed to a larger tire it would be more accurate.

I bought a set of TRD OR take offs and my speedo is considerably more accurate now than it was on 245s, I think you're onto something.

I have a feeling Toyota just calibrated the speedo for one model, and that was that, and any discrepancy wasn't enough to warrant it's own calibration.

Edit:
I think speed calibration is complicated because it runs into potential odometer fraud kinda stuff

Thats precisely what i think is going on. They calibrated for all the TRD models, for manufacturing simplicity. If so, then they should be on the hook for warranty miles, since this is from the factory.

They cant control what someone does with tire size after they purchase the truck, but from the factory, it should be relatively precise, and with my distance testing, it was way off. I have 20,000 miles on it so far, and i hit that way too fast it felt.

2024 Tacoma Stock SR5 tires over stating speed and odometer 1000004793

3.6% of 30,000 is 1080 miles, not nothing but usually warranty will give you a little leeway mileage wise.

I think I did that math right lol 😂

When i did my distance check using gps, 13 actual miles on the gps ended up registering just about 15 miles on my odometer. That would make it roughly 3000 miles off of the 20,000 miles. After the tire change, it was almost spot on by +\- a tenth of a mile. Lol thats quite a bit if thats correct.

That can't be right thats almost 15% off

Even if you add 3% to my calculations (say the speedo reads high) you get a total of 6% which would still land you at 1800 miles difference over 30,000mi
