It's a nice feel-good article for those of us already owning the engine. Born to V8s, learning to enjoy V6s, I was mildly unenthused by a '4'. However, after multiple test drives, with/without hybrid, across Landcruiser, 4Runner, and 3 different Tacomas, I came to accept it w/o issue. I'll always 'want' for a V-8 :). But after the first 6,000 miles, I can only say I'm completely satisfied so far and really have little to complain about.

This article feels like it was written with AI and goes on forever singing the praises of every feature but has no empirical data to support its actual reliability. At best, it's a puff piece.

My thoughts mirror yours. For sure, I'm a V8 guy, and honestly a V6 wouldn't suffice for me. But I wanted a smaller truck, but here we are in the mid 2020's with 4 banger trucks. I'm just about to roll up on 24k on mine taco, and I can say without any doubt, that it's the low end torque (@low RPM's) that's keeping me happy right now. 4 cylinder engine "sounds" don't excite me, just seems unnatural, like why so much chatter? Something loose in there?

Noticed that as well, again, per another comments "feel good article" Although I do think the engine is good if you look at all of its benefits, features, etc. Especially like the fact that when I'm cursing around the little 4 banger isn't working real hard. But lets discuss: I'll list what I feel are discussion points:
  • Oil pump chain (no belt garbage)
  • Both Port and Direct (I hate direct injection), but that said lets clean those intake ports washed with port injection!
  • Some kind of crazy water pump (electric) thingy that's multi-valved. Sore spot, who knows and time will tell.
  • Rings, especially oil control ring, how big is it? Gonna clog over time? That's what port injection can save the rings from.
  • Low Tension rings -- I'm more than certain, but such is life these days
  • Sure I'm missing something else...

When test driving non/hybrid versions, I definitely noticed the non-hybrid sounded like a cacophony of loose parts. The hybrid, same engine, seemed much better. The only conclusion I could come to was the non-hybrids (that I drove) did not have hood insulation dampening the sound.

Not sure if it applies to your situation but, perhaps, adding the hood material can clean up the noise for you a bit.
