Update: found a video with the 4G Tacoma TRD Pro, which is the same as what is in the Trailhunter, just labeled differently for peacock purposes. This shows the filter removal process, but I would not follow his cleaning process. He cleaned his filter so early that he could not get the old red oil off.

~~Soap box alert~~

Also, as this video shows, and the one before, these guys are using a hose outside to rinse off the dirty filters and polluting the environment with the used oil. This to me is an unacceptable practice. Better to do the rinsing in the sink and let the water treatment plant clean the used water. Same with the spraying of the red oil. We don’t change our motor oil and dump it in the yard. I prefer to leave as little trace as I can.

I think it is better to be safe than sorry. My guess is that your filter is plenty dirty enough to clean. I clean mine in the Integra a couple of times a year, usually coinciding with an oil change. Just checked out these videos. Based on my long-term experience with flat filters, I was glad to see how to clean the conical type. These are the best videos I found.

K&N Cone type engine air filter cleaning videos

As far as getting the filter out, I will look into that and update us on what I find. Probably need to loosen the hose but will confirm unless somebody else chimed in with what we can do to make it an easy job.

Thank you ma’am!! Yes you’re right I should clean it. I won’t wait to 30K. But I will wait until I’ve got all the cleaning stuff, another filter so I can clean one and load the other one in, and some idea of how to get it out easily. If I find out anything I’ll let you know.

As far as cleaning it myself, I’d enjoy the process and I would also be able to tell the dealership not to touch it.

Oh wow thanks !!

So you can disconnect the wiring.. and then you simply pull it upward. I’ll buy a new filter today.

For your additional filter, are you going to get another oil one or a paper one?

I am thinking of getting paper so I can compare performance as well as have the paper one for really really dusty conditions because I don’t think the oiled one always performs as well.

Was going to go OEM and oil it - you don’t think the oil would trap more dirt like fine particles ?

There’s quite a bit of debate on that topic. Makes my head hurt.

I’ve watched lots of videos with folks who are pros and a few who measured with modern equipment.

If I were just commuting, I would stick with oiled, but with going into very dusty environments, I am just not sure…. maybe that means I just need to clean it after an especially dirty trip. I tend to do an engine oil/filter change after long, dusty dirty trips with towing that we have taken in the Subaru and will do the same in the truck.
