Hey everyone,

Anyone know if the OEM Off road flares (non gloss black ones) are paintable? Mine got marred somehow and was trying to decide whether or not to replace, paint, or wrap. I just know that with some manufacturers that style of plastic isn’t intended to be painted and then has problems with paint adhesion.

Thanks!

I guess they would be, though they would need a little prep work if you want a smoother finish like the body paint. It maybe easier to just buy the color matched flares from a TRD Sport directly from Toyota Parts - if you are looking to match the body….

Most any plastic is printable with the right paint and prep work. But as Benny stated it would be easier to buy them painted if you're looking to color match. Otherwise a good scuff and shot of bedliner will resemble the textured finish if that's what you desire.

These flares are virtually the same material as the bumper covers used on cars today. Clean, lightly scuff with gray Scotch Brite pad, spray on an adhesion promoter and then paint.

Thanks everyone. I prefer the matte look at the moment. I’ll see if I can find a replacement. I may end up wrapping these matte black to keep the OEM look but help with the UV exposure. Especially being in Texas.

Thanks again!

Prep and materials are key to a ( bad or good paint job )
Absolutely can be painted
Hope this helps you
I'm currently working/learning from my father to paint a 1930 Ford model A.
Best thing about paint is if you put too much on and it runs, let it dry and sand it out, and start over.
Take your time and have fun 👍

I'm at the local Toyota dealership getting my first check up and found this 2026 TRD OR on the showroom floor. It has painted flares, not as shiny as the body but definitely look to be painted.

I'm not a body guy, but I'm pretty sure that's standard for painted plastic trims. I think something about the additional plasticizers effects the overall finish.
