What should I expect if I swap in coaxial speakers into the JBL front door?

hey @The Dude i'm back again, with another amateur question. Hope you don't mind!
I was thinking about choosing the aftermarket component speakers to replace the front doors and A pillars, but I wasn't sure how to make sense of the advertised frequency response range.

First, I don't know the current JBL frequency response range. Not to mention the JBL amp is tuned to work with the factory speakers in a pre-determined way. This part I am going to just accept, as in, I'm going to take a chance at how the JBL amp works with these aftermarket component speakers, and I know that it will have bearings on how the low end of my music manifest.

now, having said so, I still want to know if I could compare the low end sensitivity of the current speaker and say the Audison APK 169 (or any brand).

What I ultimately want to know if whether the new speakers I'll buy can deliver lower frequencies (say the JBL can't do lower than 60Hz, then whether the new one can do 57Hz etc).

anyway, not sure if this pursuit is sensible and possible.

Good question. From my research, I’ve not measured it myself, the door in the Tacoma plays from around 50Hz to around 1000Hz. The dash speakers play from around 1000Hz to around 3000Hz and the tweeters in the pillars play up from there. Those are REALLY rough guesses based on some testing I read in and article long before I took possession of my truck. Take them with a pound of salt.

As for a speaker set you choose, higher sensitivity is very beneficial in this use case, as is the lowest freq. capabilities. Since the Tacoma uses the front doors to produce most of the bass, and the “subwoofer” behind the seat is mainly for ANC, you’ll want to make sure that number is low. Here’s where it gets frustrating. You need something with a big enough motor that you don’t lose output, and something sensitive enough that you don’t lose output. It’s a triangle that was told to me years ago,
“You can have it good, loud or cheap, pick two.” If I were to pick a speaker based on that, I’d go with one of the big brands that specializes in swapping just speakers in cars. So Alpine, Kicker, JBL, etc. The Audison you’re looking at is, IMO, a lightweight and you’d lose bass response. The motor just isn’t up to snuff to produce lower frequencies, even if it says it can.

Btw, this is the second or third time you’ve mentioned a 2-way component set, are you not replacing the dash 2.75” speaker with a set?

First, there is a wordI probably used wrongly and interchangeably with "reponse". "Sensitivity" has its own meaning, mainly to do with perceived loudness, but I used it to mean the capability to reproduce certain low frequencies. My bad.

Regarding the forizontal dash speakers (not the pop out party one in the middle), sorry for never mentioning them. Well, I never intentionally not want to replace them, if the component system contains their replacement, sure, I will replce them. I just never paid much attetion, cause when I saw the Audison set, on the picture it only showed the door and two tiny tweetwes for the pillars.

Lastly, in terms of impedance, I will almost definitely buy 2ohm instead of 4ohm.

the Audison APK690 set is decent, I just warn you about bass response with them, the motor is kinda …. ehhh. But, since you’re using the factory amp, you could add the AP 2 me to the package and replace everything up front in one go. I know, easy for me to say, it’s not my money, so just consider it.

now you got my attention on the two dash corner speakers! the Audison does not come with those, just the A pillars and front door. So what brand and model woujld be a good plug and play for the JBL dash corners? As far as P-N-P for the dash corners, I’d have to do some research. To confuse it some, I’d need to know what you’re planning for the midbass/tweeter combo. You want speakers to complement each other as best you can when mix-n-matching. I mentioned the Audison APii because you’ve mentioned the APK 69ii set a few times.

And just because the shop recommends a 6x9 doesn’t mean you’re limited to that. The JBL speaker in the door is a 7” speaker. Food for thought. Really opens things up if you think about 6.5” offerings as well.

Good point that the dash corners need to go hand-in-hand with the A pillar and front door.

So, let's assume i'm going to go with the Audison APK690 2ohm.

Upon a quick research, the mounting structure of the two dash corners is a bit tricky, either the screw holes don't line up many aftermarket, or the housing too shallow for some aftermarket. You’ve got a shop installing all these speakers, yes? Why limit yourself to what fits the current screw holes? It’s their job to make it all fit, if humanly possible. Something like the Metra 82-8157 will allow them to adapt 2.75” or smaller mids to the dash, no cutting.

Try to stick to series if you’re buying a brand of speaker, they’re designed to work together. So if I’m using the APK 690, the AP 2 MK would be my logical choice.
