From a programming point of view, there are way to many variables including your changing driving habits, temperatures, winds, road terrain, load weight, etc. to make a perfect "estimate" as you are driving over a few days or weeks. That said, they may be able to make it better with a software update, but it is still just an estimate based on conditions over the past xxx miles of your driving.
I don’t think people expect a perfect estimate, they just expect it to be less than 2 gallons/40 miles off.

Better to have a bit extra than to run out unexpectedly.

I have noticed my range has increased after doing commute to work and my truck has new lightweight wheels on 285/70/17 falken AT4W SL. The mpg has gone up to 20 from 16.5 (stock tires in 285 tires).. I am getting 305 miles per tank now. Before the new wheels, it was 230-250. I can say this 4G is giving me way better MPG than my old 3G tacoma w 6MT and E load range tires!
A bit off topic but I'm interested in the light weight wheels you got! What brand is it and how much they weight? I'm looking into getting something a little lighter and I found Tirerack's data can be different that what the wheel manufacturer publish.

Please report back! Would love to gather some more data on this!
Just did the math 264 miles and I filled up with 14.466 gallons. 18.25 mpgs. The display said 17.8 so it wasn't too far off. Before the 285/70/r17s is showing 19.9 but I never did the math with the OEM tires

As you drive more and fill up your tank more the average calculated tank range gets better. Mine is consistently showing 350 miles now before E at approximately 22 mpg. Hybrid iforcemax.

Seems my fuel mileage has started going up after I got about 8k miles. I to have seen the estimated range go from 250 to most recently 340 per tank. I attached a screenshot of my most recent fill ups. Happy to see a trend above 23 MPG of late.

Yeah. My DTE display is trending the opposite from what people complain about here. I think it shows too high. I'd rather just have an accurate fuel gauge that show what is in the tank and was not tied to how much further the computer thinks you can go.

On the return leg of my last road trip, the first 200mi I got 24.3mpg (actual fuel fill up, dash had 24.1).
Stopped at a rest stop 189mi further on with 138 mi to go.
Dash showed 22.1 mpg.
DTE 174
Fuel gauge at 5/8 tank.

Was trying to decide whether to stop for gas at the next town or go for home. Numbers didn't seem reasonable to me. If you added the DTE to the actual miles on the tank you'd need to bet 23.4mpg (based on the 15.5-gal non-reserve capacity of the tank). And that next 138 miles I had to go included a 3500 ft increase in elevation.

Since the truck sat level while I used the rest room, I did an instrument cluster reset.
DTE dropped to 124
Fuel gauge dropped to just over 3/8 T.

Needless to say, I stopped for gas in the next town (was cheaper than at home but yet another stop). I'm not going on any more long drives without a jerry can of spare gas.
