Question Regarding Tonneau Cover and Bed Molle Panel

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has used a tonneau cover utilizing the bed rails, and have been able to successfully install any of various bed molle panels.

Trying to keep a low profile build for gas cans and recovery boards.

Any tips or help is appreciated.

I've been happy w/ this set-up (BAK Revolver cover)---- one of the reasons I got it was to keep the Molle panels (Toyota OE) usable and not take up any bed space w/ a canister.

I also have a tonneau cover with molle panels. You’ll want to install the molle panels first. You do have options on what cover to get. I ended up with a Retrax pro that has T-slots so I can add a rack if I want later. My front panel is pretty useless with my setup.

I have the same cover as my plan is to add bars ti mount bike carriers over the bed. You didn't have to mod the panels to accommodate the cannisters? What MOLLE panels did you purchase? Truck looks great!

I used the Toyota OEM molle panels. There was no modifying needed. They mount behind the bed rail and you will need to drill holes in your bed and use a nutsetter tool with supplied hardware for the bottom. The front bed rail will need to be completely removed and the side ones almost completely removed to get the molle panels behind them. The only issue I had was the Toyota supplied nuts were of a different design than what my tool was made for. The tool threads were not long enough to fully engage the nuts. The tool set had its own nuts and I crossed my fingers and installed those. They worked. If I did it again I'd skip the front panel. The Toyota panels are the cheapest I found and worked with my Trailhunter. I don't think some of the others do. Make sure you get the right ones, 5' bed vs 6' bed and if you go that route the parts department at your local dealership can print the instructions because they don't come with them.

I have a real truck Molle panel set And a BAK REVOLVER STX Cover The issue is that the real truck side Molle panel brackets go behind the factory rails. The thickness of the brackets on both sides made the Revoler cover too tight to roll up. I picked up some Small L brackets and connect them to the bottom of the factory rails. Make sure if you are using a Molle panel with a rolling type cover that they attach in front of or using the factory rails

Mattlee, love this post, although geared more toward bed Molle panels, I have a question on your tonneau:

I need your help here. Are you saying your RetraxPro XR fit on your 4th Gen Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter with Toyota OEM installed Molle Panels on inside of the bed - without any further mods? Your photos and comments seem to support this, but with all your other gear and no close up it’s hard to tell. Other still frames (attached) from videos I’ve watched online (although all without inside bed molle panels) visually seems to contradict this… these screen grabs look like there is only a centimeter or two of space between the canister and bed wall even without the in bed side Molle Panels.

So, my question, did you drop a RetraxPro XR on your 4th Gen Tacoma Trailhunter with OEM factory installed bed side Molle panels on a 6’ bed? Of course the sport utility bars above the bed behind the cab have been removed.
Please provide intel on this, photos appreciated.

Yes, the cover installed with the molle panels without any mods. I installed all the molle panels myself and let the shop I bought the cover at install it. The front molle panel is pretty useless though.
