Thanks for write up! I’ve had the parts to do this for a couple months. I’ll likely do it when I swap the winter tires out next month.
Was it difficult to remove the taillight?
Here’s mine, 17x8 +20 wheel with 285/70R17 Toyo R/T which says 33.0” diameter on the spec sheet. Likely the same as your Falkens. Stock suspension. Running about 32-35psi and been happy with the ride.
Small lift will be going on when those wheels go back on in the spring.
Oh man so jealous of the atmospheric river you guys have been having the last couple weeks! La Niña was supposed to promise us more snow, but it’s been very dry so far. That said, my best days here at Lake Louise have been in late April so here’s hoping, lots of season left. My powder board...
Thanks man! Wheel width plays a bit in how much poke you’ll have. I think a 8.0” width +20 will have almost identical poke as 8.5” wide +25.
I used the Custom Offsets calculator quite a bit when I was deciding on wheels. It was very helpful...
Haha, I hear ya man. I should take my own advice, I agonized awhile on what and how much lift to put on my truck.
Here’s mine 17x8 +20 with 285/70R17. Lift not installed in these pictures.
Yeah Tinkerer’s Adventure talked about them and the fact they hang that low isn’t ideal. I bumped one on a rock on the trail one time. The clearance at the front of the truck is better on the 4th, but worse at the rear suspension. I guess the trade off is more articulation with rear coil...
Keep an eye out for more wear in the center of the tire. I was running 40 on my 285/70R17 Toyo R/Ts and the outside of the tread wasn’t even touching the road on the rear tires. I’m running between 30-35psi now and it seems to be better.
I am extremely impressed with the stock OR suspension. Absorbs big bumps very well and is very compliant on rough trails. The only reason I could see you would want to upgrade to Fox or King is if you wanted a 2.5”+ lift or were racing.
The shocks are the same diameter as the old 5100s but with...
Mine is the Cornfed 3/4” (3/8” thick) top out shim. David was really great to deal with.
ATH Fabrication has a shim that gives 3/8” of lift which might work on top of the Tacogarage lift. https://athfab.com/product/3-8-lift-spacers-for-2024-fourth-gen-tacoma/
Yeah I’m aware of the suspension ratios. The top hat spacer I have is 3/8” thick so I won’t have stud length issues and it will indeed give me 3/4” of lift. I just call it (maybe incorrectly) a 3/4” spacer because that’s how much lift it will give me.
That’s about where I’m at on E load Toyo R/Ts in the summer. I read 35 lbs is the minimum for LT tires but I’m still getting a little more wear in the center of the tire. I put a Rubbermaid of sand in the back for the winter, but I think I’m going to try leaving it in for the summer to see if it...
Here’s my thoughts on this. Any preload spacer is going to move the equilibrium position of the shock valving closer to the bottom of the tube. This will cause the shock piston to need to travel farther and compress the spring harder in order to bottom out. This won’t “prevent” top hat failure...
I’d agree with you there, I wouldn’t venture too far off-road with SL tires, especially in a TH.
Road manners are fine with the R/Ts, I didn’t have any problems in wet conditions this summer, but I don’t remember having many super rainy days either. They’re monsters aired down and off-road in...
