Anyone having issues with a 2024 where the 4x4 won't engage and breaks every time they try to use it?

I've been to the dealership 3 times over this - all in under 8 months. It never goes into 4x4 and just flashes lights. I have two videos up on youtube I can share to show what happens but it's an absolute nightmare.

I've tried customer care and nothing is getting forward. Does toyota monitor this forum at all?

I sound awful but I was mad as a bag of bees. I just needed to record it again so there was proof.

ANYONE dealing with anything like this?

Is it the same if you have the transmission in drive or neutral?

Also what does it do if you are driving at 5mph in a straight line and switch from 2 high to 4 high?

I have videos of me doing it in neutral, drive, park, etc. rolling, gas at 5mph, etc. it happens every time.

Toyota of Denton keeps saying it’s due to a shift sensor - but it’s happened 4 times now. I get less than 1k miles each time - around that. It acts fine until I try 4wd and then it’s over. I don’t off road it often but it happens every single time I drive it and try 4x4 now. High and low.

I hate that I have to consider this but I’m kinda curious if anyone’s done that as well. I can’t afford the attorney on a whim and I’m hoping Toyota replaces it.. I’d settle for a new car or gut it and fix it but I’m sincerely worried other people have this issue and don’t know.

I know they take care and warranty well but this is undrivable and it could leave me stuck in the woods or worse.

Back in the 90’s my dad did lemon law an Infiniti Q45a. That was in CA and the attorney’s fees came out of the settlement. No out of pocket because my dad had all the paperwork in order and the atty felt it was a strong enough case.

Attys work on contingency, flat fee or hourly. It may be worth it to pay for one to draft a letter on their letterhead and see if that gets you some action.

You can try writing Toyota’s corporate office and tell them this is a safety issue and you are putting them on notice that if an accident were to occur you will be cross suing them. Stay professional and cordial in any and all communications.

I’m not a fan of lawsuits but sometimes a lawsuit is what it takes.

My only word of advice from something I went through 20 years ago on another vehicle, don't delay getting a lemon law claim started.
There was something wrong with the sound of the motor in my new truck (sounded like a diesel, I did not purchase a diesel, and it was not Toyota), so I did the "right thing" by working with the dealer to correct. As much as they tried, they could never fix it. This went on for many, many, many months. I finally contacted a lemon law attorney, and in my case, he told me I waited too long by trying to work with them. I should have contacted him (or any other lemon law attorney) much sooner. So we were not able to make a lemon law claim due to mileage and time, but we did file a claim under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. What the manufacturer essentially did was give me a large check to go away, acknowledging they could not fix the problem, sorry for the inconvenience, don't bring this up again. I was able to keep the truck, had a large sum of cash in my hand (not the full value of the truck, but a lot), went to Carmax, sold it to them, went to a Toyota dealer, and bought the 2007 Tacoma I am still driving today, and was able to pay for 95% with cash.
Don't wait

I also read about this - being past the time you can claim it. I meet two of the three criteria - same issue 3 or more times, impacts the safety or drivaility of the vehicle, but they said under 20k miles. - the government website for texas lemon law, not an attorney.

I'd like to ask a bit -

1) did you come out of pocket for the attorney and how much was it in proportion to the problems with the car/payout? Was it modest or was it a substantial cost?

2) how involved were you during the process?

3) how long were you without a vehicle or using an alternate vehicle?

1. Sorry, I don't remember. I probably paid them from the settlement money. The cost, again, 20 years ago. I can tell you I did not do tons of research to find the attorney. Saw an ad somewhere, contacted them, and we were off to the races.
2. Somewhat, I guess, again, it was 20 years ago. I gave them facts up front, they'd ask questions, I'd answer them, and we kept moving forward. To me, it was not burdensome, but I am not someone who gets all stressed out over things. It was what it was.
3. I was never without a vehicle. Had free loaners from the dealer while they were trying to rectify the problem.
