Do you think it would be possible to charge under the hood? Not sure it is a good idea to set up a permanent connection to the + charging terminal under the hood

I always charge mine under the hood. Have never had issues. It's currently charging that way for the next 2 months.

I was hoping to set it up so that I don’t have to open the hood but just be able to plug in an electric cord into a male receptacle

Did anyone ever solve the question as to whether the battery in the hybrids is an AGM type or other? I seem to remember reading differing thoughts here. Flooded? AGM?
It shouldn't really matter. I was surprised on our RAV4 Prime and Trailhunter that the battery was a typical lead acid, especially on an off-road vehicle. I'll replace mine with a Yellowtop DH7 pretty soon. The stealership for the RAV battery issue told us that the battery failed because I put in an AGM. Horsepucky. The AGM was in there for 18 months. It's just that we drove it around town only on electric (we have rooftop solar), and despite what the owner's manual says, the hybrid batteries don't charge the 12V enough. I now run a charger/maintainer on it periodically, especially when it sits for a few days.

Those with ICE only Tacomas just have to worry about all the electronics sucking up the charge. It was worse on my Jeep Gladiator with the auxiliary battery.

Pb means lead. On the left it says Sulfuric acid.
Ergo you are correct this is the Standard Lead acid battery not AGM
Both types (lead acid and AGM) have lead. AGM just has fabric in the battery that limits the amount of liquid. Still why put a liquid lead acid battery in an off-road vehicle. I'm surprised there hasn't been leaking issues. I'll replace mine with a Yellowtop DH7 (AGM) soon.

You've been using the jumper point in the fuse box for charging? The stealership said not to do that, and I think the owner's manual, but what do they know. In the RAV4 Prime manual it says not to do that, and disconnect the negative battery cable when charging. What the hell. I don't see that requirement in the Trailhunter manual.

So, you haven't had any issues, and the battery charges? Inquiring minds want to know.

The sales guy (who I know) and who has worked for Toyota for 30yrs told me it would be ok. I read what the owners manual said as well. Went with his advice and have set it up this way 4 times now for up to 6 weeks. No issues. Worked fine, truck started right up. First trip I took without the truck, left it for 2 weeks. Came home and battery was dead as a door nail. Ultimately, is this the right way to do it....can't say but it's working for me.

And you have the same hybrid as my Trailhunter, eh? That's good to know. Still, I think that I'll get a Yellowtop AGM!

Basically. TRD Pro. I do leave the windows cracked a bit (not sure that matters) but it's in a garage so no issues that way.

Well you've pretty much convinced me. I live in the southern end of the continent (NM), so we don't get quite as cold as Ontario, a few days in single digits, and 20 degree F mornings most of the winter since we're over 5000 ft in elevation. Let us know if your Pro blows up though.

Your truck will probably continue to start, because it uses the traction battery/motor to start the engine. Obviously having an alternator on some 2025 trucks has not fixed this problem. You can also reduce the chances of it going dead by not staying logged into the app, which was what Lexus told my wife to do with her BEV.

Everything that I have read says that a resting state of charge that low will eventually kill a 12 volt, so I don't expect mine to last very long. When the 12 volt fails I will replace it with a deep discharge AGM like an Optima yellow top.

No, they don't care. They have probably had this question with other hybrids for years and have their standard answers ready. It will influence my next purchase decision too
Is the app you're talking about the one that's for the 1st year for using navigation, and then 15 bucks a month thereafter?

Its the regular Toyota app that lets you lock/unlock, remote start you truck. It also can report the vehicle location and sends things like fuel level, next service and a lot of other stuff. It also can send texts telling you if the truck is unlocked or windows are down. I don't know if you need Toyota Connect (the navigation) to use it but I don't think so, although I have never used the app with my truck.

It runs down the battery because if you are logged into the app, the server frequently pings your truck for the status of all of the things it can report. That constant use of the cell service is enough to deplete a battery that is already at a low state of charge. That was what Lexus told my wife and since she stopped using the app it has not gone dead again. She has checked back several times and they just keep telling her that there is no fix. It all comes down to the fact that some Toyota vehicles that charge their 12 volts from the traction batteries keep them at very low state of charge. Mine is never above 12.2 volts but the battery is still alive. Just lucky I guess.
